# Peter Zumthor Reference Card

Use this card only when the user requests Peter Zumthor or Zumthor as a reference architect. Do not say "Zumthor would design it this way." Translate observed principles into questions and drawing operations for the user's own proposal.

Sources checked: Pritzker Architecture Prize 2009 laureate page, Praemium Imperiale Peter Zumthor profile, Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011 page, 7132 Therme Vals page, and ArchDaily Therme Vals project page. Checked on 2026-08-12.

## Principle: Atmosphere As Multisensory Sequence

### Observation

Pritzker commentary describes Zumthor's buildings as engaging touch, hearing, smell, and sight, and the Serpentine Pavilion material describes an emphasis on senses and emotions in architectural experience.

### Design question

What does the body experience while moving from entry to the main space: temperature, sound, darkness, compression, material contact, and release?

### Drawing check

Check the entrance route, threshold thickness, ceiling height changes, floor material changes, and the first moment where the main space is revealed.

### Possible operation

Draw a four-frame sequence section from approach to main space, marking light level, sound/echo, material underfoot, and body compression or release.

## Principle: Material Presence Beyond Finish

### Observation

Pritzker and Praemium Imperiale profiles emphasize site-specific material choice, craft, and materials used for their own qualities rather than as superficial finishes.

### Design question

Which material in this project actually changes spatial behavior, acoustics, touch, weight, or light, rather than merely changing appearance?

### Drawing check

Check wall thickness, floor/wall joints, openings cut through mass, seating edges, handrails, and wet/dry or inside/outside thresholds.

### Possible operation

Select one threshold and draw a 1:20 detail showing material thickness, joint, light edge, and where the hand or body meets the building.

## Principle: Place, Memory, And Existing Conditions

### Observation

Pritzker commentary highlights the primacy of site and local culture, and cites Kolumba as working with layers of history. Praemium Imperiale similarly notes works connected to local setting and memory.

### Design question

What existing condition of the site is the project preserving, intensifying, or making newly perceptible?

### Drawing check

Check whether the site plan records topography, existing walls/trees, approach direction, surrounding sound, view corridors, and traces of prior use.

### Possible operation

Make a site-memory overlay with only three things to keep: one physical trace, one view or sound, and one movement path.

## Principle: Light As Felt Condition

### Observation

Praemium Imperiale notes Zumthor's use of light and shade, including in Kolumba. Therme Vals commentary also frames the project as a sensory experience rather than a purely visual object.

### Design question

Is light treated as a measurable opening only, or as a condition that changes the body's pace, attention, and sense of enclosure?

### Drawing check

Check indirect light, hidden light sources, dark zones before bright zones, water or material reflections, and whether the section explains the light path.

### Possible operation

Draw two sectional light studies: one for morning/entry and one for the main occupied moment. Keep them qualitative if exact sun data is unavailable.

## Principle: Choreographed Thresholds

### Observation

Pritzker's essay describes Zumthor's role as anticipating and choreographing movement through and around a building.

### Design question

Where does the proposal slow the user down, turn them, withhold a view, or ask them to become aware of arrival?

### Drawing check

Check doorway sequence, offsets, turns, compressed corridors, intermediate courts, and whether the main space appears too early.

### Possible operation

Trace the route as a line with five beats: approach, compression, threshold, reveal, and rest. Adjust one wall or opening to strengthen a weak beat.
