# Vincent Van Duysen Reference Card

Use this card only when the user requests Vincent Van Duysen, Van Duysen, or ヴァン・デュイセン as a reference architect. Do not say "Van Duysen would design it this way." Translate observed principles into questions and drawing operations for the user's own proposal.

Sources checked: official Vincent Van Duysen Architects lecture/press page, Interior Design interview "10 Questions With... Vincent Van Duysen" (May 23, 2017), and Designboom interview page. Checked on 2026-08-12. The official page was reachable in search results but intermittently timed out during fetch; avoid claims that depend only on inaccessible text.

## Principle: Spatial Clarity Through Reduction

### Observation

Public interviews describe attention to elementary forms, calmness, and distilling forms toward their essence.

### Design question

Which walls, openings, and level changes are essential to the concept, and which are only making the plan noisy?

### Drawing check

Check whether the plan can be explained with one or two primary spatial moves before room names are added.

### Possible operation

Trace the plan once with only poche, main route, and main void/opening. Remove or align one secondary wall that weakens the primary move.

## Principle: Material Restraint As Spatial Continuity

### Observation

Van Duysen discusses natural and tactile materials, including stone and wood, and projects are often described through warm, textured materiality rather than applied decoration.

### Design question

Does the material strategy clarify zones and thresholds, or is it only added as a finish after the plan is solved?

### Drawing check

Look for where material changes coincide with spatial thresholds, floor level changes, wall thickness, or light conditions.

### Possible operation

Choose two material zones and draw them as plan hatches plus one sectional detail at the threshold. Avoid adding many unrelated finishes.

## Principle: Light And Shadow As Structure

### Observation

Published commentary on his work often highlights light, shadow, and atmosphere. Treat this as an observed critical theme, not a direct quotation unless verified in the source at hand.

### Design question

Where is the project intentionally bright, where is it intentionally compressed or shaded, and how does that sequence support the concept?

### Drawing check

Check orientation, opening size, wall depth, courtyard position, top light, and the first view from the entrance.

### Possible operation

Draw two small section-perspectives comparing a direct-bright entry sequence and a compressed-then-open sequence.

## Principle: Interior, Furniture, And Architecture Continuity

### Observation

His practice spans architecture, interiors, furniture, and product design, and public interviews connect inhabited comfort with architectural composition.

### Design question

Are built-in elements, furniture, storage, and openings supporting the architectural idea, or are they floating inside rooms?

### Drawing check

Check whether major furniture, storage, counters, benches, and stairs are aligned with walls, views, and structural rhythm.

### Possible operation

Add only the furniture that determines scale and behavior, then redraw one wall as a thickened inhabited edge with storage, seating, or light control.

## Principle: Selective Openness

### Observation

Interview material around showroom design describes drawing the outside into the interior and using gardens, geometric elements, and spatial flow. Use this as a principle of controlled continuity rather than generic "open plan."

### Design question

Which exterior view or courtyard should be opened, and which service or private area should be withheld?

### Drawing check

Check entrance sightlines, courtyard edges, window placement, and whether circulation reveals the best space too early or at the right moment.

### Possible operation

Draw two overlays: one with all possible visual connections, one with only the three views the concept truly needs.
