# Hack Market (Back Market · 2023)

## Insight
New tech brands use manipulative tactics — artificial scarcity, countdown timers, fake "deals" — to exploit consumers into buying new devices they don't need. Back Market could flip these tactics to make the case for refurbished.

## Mechanic
Back Market appropriated the dark patterns of tech product launches — countdown timers, "limited stock" alerts, "exclusive" access — to promote refurbished devices. The campaign hacked the marketing language of the industry it was disrupting. Consumers participated by engaging with the inverted mechanics.

## Why it worked
User as co-author (P09): the audience engages with the familiar launch mechanics before the twist is revealed. Enemy or conflict (P02): the campaign positions the entire new-device marketing complex as the adversary. The meta-quality — using the villain's own weapons against them — makes the campaign both funny and righteous.

## Steal
When your category has established manipulative conventions, adopt them ironically to expose them. The audience recognises the mechanics from their own experience, making the critique visceral rather than abstract.
