# The Last Photo (CALM · 2022)

## Insight
The cultural image of someone at risk of suicide is a visibly distressed, withdrawn individual — but the last photos of most people who die by suicide show them smiling, laughing, apparently happy.

## Mechanic
An exhibition and campaign presenting real final photographs of people who died by suicide — joyful, ordinary images — alongside text from their families. The contrast between what was visible and what was hidden destroys the mental model that keeps people from seeking help or offering it.

## Why it worked
The campaign attacks a specific cognitive bias (I would recognise if someone was at risk) with direct, irrefutable visual evidence. It is not an argument — it is a fact presented without decoration. Each smiling face is a counter-proof.

## Steal
Attack a specific, named cognitive bias with the minimum evidence required to disprove it. When the bias is destroyed, the desired behaviour becomes obvious without being prescribed.
