The insight: what if the deceased's will rewarded the one family member who hadn't borrowed his car? The Beetle, cheap and unpretentious, becomes the vehicle of integrity — literally. ## Mechanic A black-and-white TV spot set at the reading of a will. A wealthy man's relatives sit in expectation — they have been driving his expensive cars for years, borrowing money. One nephew, Ralph, is revealed to have been driving his own car. A Volkswagen. The lawyer reads: "To my nephew Ralph, who always maintained that money isn't everything, and never once asked to borrow mine — Ralph, you were right. I leave everything to you." One of DDB's most celebrated Volkswagen spots. ## Why it worked P11 (absurd as carrier): the scenario is comic in its exaggeration of family dynamics — everyone else is revealed as a sycophant at the reading of the will. P16 (long-form drama): the spot tells a complete character story in 60 seconds with genuine stakes and a satisfying twist. The Beetle is positioned not as a cheap car but as an honest car — the choice of a person with integrity. ## Steal Products that are chosen for practical rather than status reasons can be repositioned as moral choices. The Beetle's cheapness becomes evidence of Ralph's character, not his poverty. Find the consumer who chose your product for the right reasons and make them the hero. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
