The most interesting material for beer advertising is not the beer itself but the people who drink it and what they believe. ## Mechanic A short Errol Morris character portrait featuring an individual with an unusual or strongly held opinion — possibly about mayonnaise or food — delivered with the quiet sincerity of a documentary interview. Part of the Miller Genuine Draft Errol Morris series. ## Why it worked The specificity of opinion (even a banal one) creates a distinctly human portrait that is more memorable than a product demonstration. Morris's framing technique — interviewees speaking directly to camera — creates intimacy that advertising rarely achieves. ## Steal Commission a documentarian, not an advertising director, for a character-led campaign. The grammar of documentary creates a different contract with the viewer: they believe what they see in ways they cannot believe a scripted commercial. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[guinness-surfer-1999.md|Surfer]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
