The absurdist move: what if the spokesperson's nose actually grew with every misleading claim, making the industry's dishonesty physically visible? ## Mechanic A film playing on the Pinocchio fairy-tale trope applied to insurance industry claims — visible, literal lying made visual and absurd, with the honest alternative offered as contrast. ## Why it worked Using a universally understood symbol of lying (the growing nose) to satirise the insurance industry's communication habits positioned Progressive as the honest alternative without making a direct competitive attack. The absurdity was the credibility mechanism. ## Steal Category conventions that involve implicit dishonesty (price anchoring, hidden fees, fine print) can be exposed through fairy-tale or folk-tale archetypes without legal risk. Pinocchio is recognisable shorthand that doesn't require naming a competitor. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
