# The Force (Volkswagen · 2011)

## Insight
The Passat was a reliable but emotionally unexciting family car. Parents who buy sensible cars secretly want to believe their choices are still connected to something exciting. Children never lose the ability to believe in magic. Those two truths intersect in a family that drives a Passat.

## Mechanic
A 60-second film: a small child dressed as Darth Vader tries to use The Force on various household objects — without success. He tries the family's Passat in the driveway. The father, watching from inside, remotely starts the car using the new keyless engine start. The child believes he did it. Pure joy, zero product claims.

## Why it worked
P05 (cultural hijack): Star Wars is the most culturally embedded myth in American popular culture — hijacking it required no setup and carried enormous emotional pre-loading. P11 (absurdism): the absurdist premise (child dressed as Vader) was legible and warm rather than strange or alienating. The emotional insight was triple: the child's belief in magic, the parent's joy at the child's belief, and the parent's own access to a small piece of magic (remote start). Uploaded to YouTube before the Super Bowl aired — 12 million views before the game, 50 million within a week. The first true pre-Super Bowl viral release.

## Steal
Cultural hijack only works when the hijacked property already carries the emotion you need. Don't borrow a cultural reference to seem current — borrow it because it already contains the emotional payload your insight requires. Then add only the minimum amount of product to make the brand connection legible.
