Use these as method anchors. Confirm current law, adopted jurisdictional rules, local rules, standing orders, scheduling orders, protective orders, engagement terms, and firm/client policy before applying them.

| ID | Source | Use | Status and limitation |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| FRCP | [Federal Rules of Civil Procedure](https://www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/document/federal-rules-of-civil-procedure.pdf) | Rules 16, 26, 34, 37(e), and related provisions for issue definition, proportionality, ESI, preservation, supplementation, and discovery planning | Primary federal authority; current PDF is printed December 1, 2025. Federal baseline only. |
| MCL | [Manual for Complex Litigation, Fourth Edition](https://www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/mcl4.pdf) | Early issue definition, targeted discovery, document identification, preservation planning, and case-management discipline | Federal Judicial Center guidance, not binding law; verify current rules and local orders. |
| EDRM | [EDRM Model 2.0](https://edrm.net/edrm-model/current/) | Identification, preservation, collection, processing, review, production, presentation, disposition, and continuous analysis | Conceptual industry framework, not a procedural rule; pin the version used. |
| IGRM | [EDRM Information Governance Reference Model](https://edrm.net/resources/frameworks-and-standards/information-governance-reference-model/) | Assigning preservation and disposition responsibility across legal, records, IT, business, and risk functions | Conceptual framework, not legal authority. |
| ABA-1.16 | [ABA Model Rule 1.16](https://www.americanbar.org/groups/professional_responsibility/publications/model_rules_of_professional_conduct/rule_1_16_declining_or_terminating_representation/) | Client-protective transfer and surrender steps at termination | Model-rule text; check adopted local rule and file-ownership law. |
| ABA-close | [ABA closing-practice guidance](https://www.americanbar.org/groups/senior_lawyers/resources/voice-of-experience/2010-2022/closing-your-law-practice-ethical-considerations/) | Review of open matters, transfer, retention, destruction, cloud access, and jurisdictional variation | Practical guidance; it expressly cautions that retention periods vary and may need to be longer. |
| DOCREVIEW | [Sibling docreview skill](../../docreview/SKILL.md) | Manifest, review-plan, privilege-hold, gap, and reconciliation interface for document-level review | Repository-local contract; use its current schemas and do not make an autonomous privilege ruling. |

The folder layout and artifact schemas in this skill are recommendations derived from these sources and litigation practice. They are not themselves mandatory legal requirements.
