# AI Search Visibility — 2026 ## Current principle Google's 2026 guidance says traditional SEO best practices remain relevant to generative-AI Search features because those experiences use Google's broader ranking and quality systems. Do not build a strategy around unsupported "GEO hacks." ## Useful foundations Prioritize: - helpful original content; - crawlability/indexability; - clear structure; - strong images/video where relevant; - accurate structured data; - page experience; - source/entity clarity; - trustworthy authorship/context where appropriate; - product functionality that genuinely satisfies the query. ## Non-commodity content Differentiation can come from: - original data; - first-hand testing; - proprietary tools/calculators; - expert explanation; - original visuals; - unique examples; - primary-source synthesis; - strong product utility. Do not publish generic AI summaries of pages already ranking. ## llms.txt Google clarified in June 2026: - `llms.txt` is not required for Google Search; - it does not positively or negatively affect Google Search visibility/rankings. A site may maintain it for other consumers, but do not present it as Google SEO. ## Google Search generative-AI controls By late August 2026, Google Search Console documented controls for inclusion in Search generative-AI features and reporting for generative-AI Search performance. Because product availability/account UI can change: - verify current Search Console behavior; - do not invent account settings; - distinguish inclusion control from ranking optimization. ## AI-search measurement When the report is available, examine: - generative-AI impressions; - pages; - country/device; - trend over time. Do not equate visibility with clicks, leads, or revenue. Connect AI-search exposure to site outcomes where data supports it. ## Preferred Sources Google's Preferred Sources feature can highlight selected publishers for users who choose them. This is audience preference/distribution, not a universal ranking boost. ## FAQ rich-result change Google removed FAQ rich results from Search in May 2026. Do not keep old SEO checklists that recommend FAQ schema solely to win FAQ SERP treatment. ## Spam policies Google's spam policies, including scaled-content abuse, apply across Search including generative-AI experiences. AI-generated content can be useful, but automation does not exempt low-value scaled pages from quality/spam policies.
