# Fear No Susan Glenn (Axe · 2012)

## Insight
Every man has a "Susan Glenn" — the one who got away, the girl he was too afraid to approach. Axe's "smell good, get girls" premise was tired. This campaign found a more honest and emotionally resonant truth underneath: the real enemy isn't competition, it's the fear of rejection.

## Mechanic
Kiefer Sutherland narrates a short film about "Susan Glenn" — a girl who existed at the edge of every boy's high school experience, desired but never approached. The film was delivered as a monologue, absurdist in its earnest sincerity, and anchored in universal male experience. The campaign asked the question "what if you'd had the nerve?" — framing Axe as the confidence enabler.

## Why it worked
Axe moved from juvenile boasting (P11 absurdism about attracting many women) to genuine emotional truth about one woman. The long-form monologue format (P16) gave the insight room to breathe. P11 shows up in the slightly heightened, theatrical delivery — it's sincere but self-aware. The campaign earned genuine engagement from men who recognized the universal experience.

## Steal
The strongest positioning move for a bravado brand is to reveal the vulnerability underneath the bravado. It doesn't undermine the claim — it makes it more human and therefore more believable.
