Every PR and advertising instinct said: apologize, reassure, demonstrate quality. But Fallon understood that trust is rebuilt emotionally, not rationally. Cadbury's emotional brand territory was joy — pure, irrational, effortless joy. ## Mechanic A gorilla sits behind a drumkit. Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" builds. The gorilla drums the iconic fill with total commitment and visible pleasure. No product, no logo until the final frame. Duration: 90 seconds. ## Why it worked Three patterns intersect at maximum efficiency. P11 absurdism: a gorilla playing drums is preposterous and inexplicable, which makes it impossible to look away. P16 long-form drama: the entire 90 seconds is structured as tension-build-release, with the drum fill as climax — earned, not given. P07 invisible brand: Cadbury appears only at the end, trusting that the emotional transfer from gorilla-joy to brand is automatic. The spot restored Cadbury's brand likeability faster than any apology campaign could have. The viral spread predated YouTube's advertising capability — it spread because people wanted to share it, not because it was promoted. ## Steal When a brand needs emotional rehabilitation: do not address the crisis. Address the emotional territory the brand owns. Pure, unexplained joy demonstrates confidence; apology demonstrates guilt. The gorilla didn't say "we're sorry" — it said "we're still Cadbury." The 90-second runtime was essential: shorter would have lost the tension; any copy would have broken the spell. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
