# Your Cheatin' Heart (Pepsi · 1995)

## Insight

Pepsi's cola wars with Coke framed every consumer choice as an act of brand loyalty or brand betrayal. "Cheating" on your cola brand — drinking the rival's product — is the premise. The cultural tension of consumer brand loyalty, treated as romantic infidelity, was ripe for comic exploitation.

## Mechanic

A TV film playing on the cola wars conceit: a Pepsi drinker caught "cheating" with a Coke (or vice versa), framed in the melodramatic language of romantic betrayal. Part of Pepsi's tradition of using the Coke rivalry as comic material rather than serious competitive positioning.

## Why it worked

P11 (absurd as carrier): applying the emotional register of romantic betrayal to beverage choices is inherently comic, and the absurdity highlights rather than diminishes the brand rivalry. P16 (long-form drama) gives the melodrama space to play out. The cola wars gave Pepsi an ongoing source of comic material that required no product claims — the rivalry itself was the content.

## Steal

If your brand has a well-known rivalry, lean into it for comedy rather than positioning. The rivalry generates more attention than any product message, and humor defuses the defensiveness that straight competitive advertising creates.
