ESPN's anchor hosts have credibility with fans but are rarely celebrated. The ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut is a comedy setting hiding in plain sight: what if the athletes really worked there? ## Mechanic A long-running campaign of 30-second spots set in the ESPN Bristol headquarters, treating it as a mundane office where athletes, coaches, and anchors coexist in absurd situations — a basketball player helping with the copy machine, a hockey player in the break room. Deadpan delivery; no winking. ## Why it worked The campaign has run for nearly three decades because the format is inexhaustible — any athlete, any sport, any mundane office scenario. The joke is structural, not situational, which is why it doesn't age. The casting of athletes in ordinary contexts validates ESPN's authentic relationship with sports while differentiating it from the reverent, drama-first approach of competitors. ## Steal When you have a long-term campaign, build it around a format rather than a message. A format can accommodate any cultural moment, any new talent, any shift in sports. A message becomes outdated; a format becomes a ritual. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
