# Anime and 2D Animation Techniques 59 cards. These decide a frame: what is in it, how it is lit, and what it is made of. Every card carries what it is, what it does to the audience, where it works best, what to avoid, and the prompt written out in full. **On a drawn piece that is not anime** — a Western cartoon, a kids' series, a picture-book look — take the drawing vocabulary from these cards and replace the words "anime style" that open many Prompt fields with the piece's own declared art style. --- ### Register Before the Device **Also called:** the anime selector, register first, how much may the drawing admit **What it is:** The card at the head of the `anime.` shelf. It describes no look. It asks the three questions the shelf's own pair graph asks over and over — **how far may this picture admit that it is drawn, what has to stay readable while it does, and does the device fire once or come back on a schedule** — and hands back a named shortlist for each answer. The axes were not invented: they were read off the fifty-one `Yields to:` conditions the cards carry and cross-checked line by line against every `Avoid when:` in the file, and the conditions that repeated became the questions. Every card cited here is cited by id. **Effect on the audience:** None. This card never reaches the screen. It exists so that the card that does reach the screen was chosen against the register, the thing that has to read and the schedule, rather than picked because it was remembered from a series. **Used for and where it works best:** Answer the three questions **in order and out loud, in one sentence each, before you open the shelf**. The first answer eliminates the large majority of the file; the second and third leave a shortlist of three to six. If you cannot answer question one — *how much may this picture admit it is drawn* — you are not ready to pick a device, you are ready to settle the style of the piece, and that decision is upstream of this shelf. Where two answers fight for one frame, that is two registers meeting, and the join is a cut, not a card. **Best in:** formats: all | genres: all **Avoid when:** **The piece has already settled into ordinary anime grammar**, which is where most of this shelf lives — thirty of the fifty-six reachable cards sit under axis one's middle value, so on a standard series episode that question is already answered and this map has only two questions left and is doing two-thirds of the work it does on a piece whose register is still open. Also avoid it as a way of deciding between two traditions: the Japanese and Western halves of this shelf are not alternatives to each other, they are two vocabularies, and a card chosen out of the wrong one reads as an import in any register. **And it does not answer a safety question and must not be read as one.** Axis three asks *does this device come back*, which is not the same question as *how fast may it come back*. Two cards on this shelf make a bright thing and a dark thing take turns, and both of them now hand the rate and the stopping point to `safety.photosensitive_flash`, which outranks every answer on this map. This card sets no rate, and reading a rate out of its third axis is reading something that is not there. **Prompt:** `[Selector — produces no prompt. It returns card ids. The chosen card carries the prompt.]` --- **The axes** **Axis 1 — How far may this picture admit that it is drawn?** Asked first, because it is the condition the shelf repeats most: seventeen of the fifty-one `Yields to:` lines turn on register, and they are stated as facts about the work rather than as feelings about the viewer — *"Realistic register: show the change in the eyes"* (`anime.power_up_aura`), *"Realistic work, or where the meme reading intrudes"* (`anime.naruto_run`), *"Realistic or historical work: simulate the dust"* (`anime.yutapon_cubes`), *"Serious drama: the symbol plays as childish"* (`anime.blush_lines`), *"Serious or realistic work: use backlight, not sparkles"* (`anime.shojo_sparkle_bg`), *"Real horror or heavy drama: vector softens it"* (`anime.cn_flat_vector`), *"Work needing polish: a product ad, a glossy series"* (`anime.line_boil`), *"Metal does not compress; shake the camera instead"* (`anime.squash_on_landing`). The `Avoid when:` fields say the same thing from the other side, over and over: *in realistic drama it breaks belief*, *in realistic work it looks silly*, *in a serious or formal scene the bounce undercuts the gravity*. **Axis 2 — What has to stay readable, and what may be given up to get it?** Twelve conditions turn on this and the recurring verb is literally *read*: *"Busy background: flatten it so the copies read"* (`anime.multiples`), *"Similar body shapes stop reading as silhouettes"* (`anime.silhouette_flat_action`), *"Wide shot or fast action: the small beat is invisible"* (`anime.kyoani_micro_expression`), *"Faces must stay readable; unsettle the line instead"* (`anime.fisheye_2d`), *"The reflection cannot be drawn large enough to read"* (`anime.eye_reflection`), *"The story needs a face the viewer can feel"* (`anime.upa_flat`), *"Instructional work: grain and scratches bury the detail"* (`anime.cuphead_look`), *"The audience cannot read the lettering's language"* (`anime.drawn_onomatopoeia`), *"The line that matters needs the face"* (`anime.talking_heads_bg_pan`). Every card on this shelf protects one thing and spends the rest of the frame on it. Naming the protected thing before choosing is what stops the answer being a preference. **Axis 3 — Does it fire once, hold as a state, or come back on a schedule?** Seven conditions are about duration and return rather than look — *"The travel must sustain: loop in place, move the background"* (`anime.run_cycle`), *"The handmade feel must run long without tiring the eye"* (`anime.rough_animation`), *"Realistic drama, or a second use in one episode"* (`anime.punch_through_frame`), *"Every memory graded alike: mark it by texture"* (`anime.flashback_desaturation`), *"Too many cards in a row: introduce by behaviour"* (`anime.character_intro_card`), *"Outside weekly anime: choose the credit design deliberately"* (`anime.ending_still_walk`), *"A whole season drops at once"* (`anime.next_episode_preview`) — and it is the dominant shape of the `Avoid when:` fields across the whole file, where *used every time, it dies* is said in more cards than any other warning. It is asked last because it is the only axis that reaches the serial-slot cards at all, and it is the axis a reader is most likely to skip, because a shot list has no column for *again next week*. --- **The map** **Axis 1 — how far may the picture admit it is drawn** | Answer | The shortlist, by id | | :--- | :--- | | **It must not admit it — a real camera or a real body could have produced this** | `anime.on_ones` · `anime.hold` · `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` · `anime.ghibli_ma` · `anime.ghibli_food` · `anime.kon_match_cut` · `anime.shinkai_light` · `anime.dof_2d` · `anime.lens_flare_2d` · `anime.bloom_hair` · `anime.light_stripe_eyes` · `anime.flashback_desaturation` · `anime.fisheye_2d` · `anime.eye_reflection` · `anime.insert_song_montage` | | **It may admit it in the grammar the audience already knows — the world stays continuous** | `anime.run_cycle` · `anime.walking_on_twos` · `anime.talking_heads_bg_pan` · `anime.mouth_flap_three` · `anime.bank_footage` · `anime.speed_lines_radial` · `anime.multiples` · `anime.squash_stretch` · `anime.squash_on_landing` · `anime.western_smear` · `anime.beam_clash` · `anime.kanada_dragon` · `anime.yutapon_cubes` · `anime.silhouette_flat_action` · `anime.extreme_foreshortening` · `anime.punch_through_frame` · `anime.power_up_aura` · `anime.naruto_run` · `anime.emotion_icons` · `anime.blush_lines` · `anime.sweat_nervous_shake` · `anime.shojo_sparkle_bg` · `anime.drawn_onomatopoeia` · `anime.flat_cel_shading` · `anime.toon_shading` · `anime.drawn_water` · `anime.ending_still_walk` · `anime.next_episode_preview` · `anime.character_intro_card` · `anime.attack_name_callout` | | **It must admit it — the picture declares itself a made object, a print, a page, a pastiche** | `anime.line_boil` · `anime.rough_animation` · `anime.screen_tone` · `anime.benday_dots` · `anime.superflat_pastel_dream` · `anime.rubber_hose` · `anime.cuphead_look` · `anime.upa_flat` · `anime.klasky_csupo_distortion` · `anime.cn_flat_vector` · `anime.storybook_look` | **Axis 2 — what has to stay readable** | Answer | The shortlist, by id | | :--- | :--- | | **A face — the acting carries the beat** | `anime.hold` · `anime.mouth_flap_three` · `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` · `anime.emotion_icons` · `anime.blush_lines` · `anime.sweat_nervous_shake` · `anime.shojo_sparkle_bg` · `anime.speed_lines_radial` · `anime.light_stripe_eyes` · `anime.dof_2d` · `anime.bloom_hair` · `anime.eye_reflection` · `anime.klasky_csupo_distortion` | | **A body or an action shape — who is who, and what hit what** | `anime.on_ones` · `anime.walking_on_twos` · `anime.run_cycle` · `anime.naruto_run` · `anime.talking_heads_bg_pan` · `anime.multiples` · `anime.western_smear` · `anime.squash_stretch` · `anime.squash_on_landing` · `anime.silhouette_flat_action` · `anime.extreme_foreshortening` · `anime.punch_through_frame` · `anime.beam_clash` · `anime.kanada_dragon` · `anime.yutapon_cubes` · `anime.power_up_aura` · `anime.rubber_hose` | | **A word, a name or a credit — something the viewer has to parse, not just see** | `anime.drawn_onomatopoeia` · `anime.attack_name_callout` · `anime.character_intro_card` · `anime.next_episode_preview` · `anime.ending_still_walk` | | **Nothing in particular — the whole frame is the statement** | `anime.line_boil` · `anime.rough_animation` · `anime.bank_footage` · `anime.ghibli_ma` · `anime.ghibli_food` · `anime.kon_match_cut` · `anime.shinkai_light` · `anime.screen_tone` · `anime.flat_cel_shading` · `anime.flashback_desaturation` · `anime.superflat_pastel_dream` · `anime.fisheye_2d` · `anime.lens_flare_2d` · `anime.toon_shading` · `anime.insert_song_montage` · `anime.drawn_water` · `anime.upa_flat` · `anime.cuphead_look` · `anime.benday_dots` · `anime.cn_flat_vector` · `anime.storybook_look` | **Axis 3 — once, a state, or an appointment** | Answer | The shortlist, by id | | :--- | :--- | | **Once — it occupies one cut and is gone, and the firing is the content** | `anime.on_ones` · `anime.hold` · `anime.ghibli_ma` · `anime.ghibli_food` · `anime.kon_match_cut` · `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` · `anime.speed_lines_radial` · `anime.emotion_icons` · `anime.blush_lines` · `anime.sweat_nervous_shake` · `anime.shojo_sparkle_bg` · `anime.drawn_onomatopoeia` · `anime.eye_reflection` · `anime.extreme_foreshortening` · `anime.punch_through_frame` · `anime.power_up_aura` · `anime.beam_clash` · `anime.kanada_dragon` · `anime.yutapon_cubes` · `anime.multiples` · `anime.western_smear` · `anime.squash_stretch` · `anime.squash_on_landing` | | **A state — it has to hold for a shot or a scene and survive a reverse** | Every card named in the two tables above that is not in this row or the next. The answer is the intersection of the three shortlists, and it is normally three to six cards wide.* --- **The default, and the one against it** **The default is `anime.flat_cel_shading` on the surface with `anime.mouth_flap_three` on the talking — and it is measured by conditions, not by edges.** `anime.flat_cel_shading` is reached from three different regions of the shelf for three genuinely different reasons: `anime.line_boil` sends a reader there when the work needs polish, `anime.silhouette_flat_action` when similar body shapes stop reading, and `anime.cn_flat_vector` when real horror or heavy drama needs weight the vector look softens away. Three sources, three unrelated conditions, and the card's own `Best in:` says *genres: all*. Its partner is chosen the same way: only two reachable cards on this shelf carry *genres: all*, and the other is `anime.mouth_flap_three`, which is what makes a drawn character speak at a price the schedule can pay. **`anime.kyoani_micro_expression` takes more inbound edges than either of them and is not the default.** Four cards send a reader to it — `anime.speed_lines_radial`, `anime.emotion_icons`, `anime.blush_lines` and `anime.upa_flat` — but the first three fire on one condition wearing three coats: *the scene has turned serious, so stop drawing the feeling and act it*. Counting edges makes it the shelf's fallback. Counting conditions makes it what it is: **the door out of the stylised half of the shelf into the naturalistic half**, and a door is not a floor. In-degree here measures how often the shelf runs out of register, not what it rests on. **The one against it is `anime.ghibli_ma`.** Nothing on this shelf routes to it; it is named by no `Yields to:` field here; and it is the only card whose content is the absence of the shelf's own product — no event, no dialogue, no drawing being spent. The default pair exists to keep a character talking continuously and cheaply; `anime.ghibli_ma` stops the character talking and spends the shot on nothing, and it is the only card here that improves the cards on either side of it rather than the frame it occupies. Its one stated cost is placement — put down with no build in front of it, it reads as boredom rather than breath — which a preceding scene simply pays. Its cousin against the grain is `anime.storybook_look`, likewise never yielded to, and the only card on the shelf that answers a question about **evidence** rather than about style: it declares itself illustration instead of reconstruction, which is a claim about truth that no other card here is making. --- **The unasked** **Thirty-four of the fifty-six reachable cards are the target of no `Yields to:` field anywhere on this shelf.** They can be chosen but nothing ever sends you to them. By id: `anime.talking_heads_bg_pan` · `anime.mouth_flap_three` · `anime.rough_animation` · `anime.bank_footage` · `anime.squash_stretch` · `anime.beam_clash` · `anime.kanada_dragon` · `anime.punch_through_frame` · `anime.power_up_aura` · `anime.naruto_run` · `anime.shinkai_light` · `anime.ghibli_ma` · `anime.ghibli_food` · `anime.kon_match_cut` · `anime.emotion_icons` · `anime.blush_lines` · `anime.sweat_nervous_shake` · `anime.shojo_sparkle_bg` · `anime.flashback_desaturation` · `anime.superflat_pastel_dream` · `anime.drawn_onomatopoeia` · `anime.eye_reflection` · `anime.toon_shading` · `anime.ending_still_walk` · `anime.next_episode_preview` · `anime.character_intro_card` · `anime.insert_song_montage` · `anime.attack_name_callout` · `anime.drawn_water` · `anime.rubber_hose` · `anime.western_smear` · `anime.klasky_csupo_distortion` · `anime.storybook_look` · `anime.squash_on_landing` **And the shape of that list is the finding, not its length.** Two blocks fall inside it whole, and neither is an accident. **First: every card under axis three's third value is unasked — all six of them.** `anime.bank_footage`, `anime.ending_still_walk`, `anime.next_episode_preview`, `anime.character_intro_card`, `anime.attack_name_callout` and `anime.insert_song_montage` yield outward and nothing yields inward. The pair graph is a graph of **shots**: a reader comparing two cards was holding one frame, and a slot in a weekly schedule is not an alternative to a frame. That is why the whole serial region is unreachable from inside the shelf, and why axis three exists on this card and is asked rather than assumed. **A device that returns is not an alternative to a device that plays once — it is a different kind of answer**, and the pair field has no way to say so. **Second: the symbol dictionary can be left but not entered.** `anime.emotion_icons`, `anime.blush_lines`, `anime.sweat_nervous_shake`, `anime.shojo_sparkle_bg` and `anime.drawn_onomatopoeia` all yield outward and not one of them is ever yielded to. Three of the five go to the naturalistic side of this shelf, two of those to the same card; a fourth goes to a card this map cannot reach at all; and the fifth leaves the prefix entirely. The shelf knows how to stop using the drawn symbol and has no route that starts using it. **The new card this shelf wants is the one about the symbol withheld**: once the audience has been taught the dictionary, its absence at the moment it is expected is a beat with no card to carry it. The nearest thing that exists records the observation and cannot be reached — `anime.blink_cycle` notes in its own body that no blink at all reads as shock or as a thing that is not a person, and it is filed as additive, so nothing on this shelf routes a reader there to read it. `anime.register_before_the_device` --- ### Animating on Ones **Also called:** ones, full animation **What it is:** A new drawing on every video frame, twenty four drawings per second. The most expensive cadence there is. **Effect on the audience:** The smoothest, fastest feel available. Motion turns liquid and physical, as if the body has real weight. **Used for and where it works best:** The punch or the leap the viewer has to feel in their own body, or a fast camera move inside a drawn shot. In battle and sports anime confine it to the decisive seconds because of the cost; in a commercial, spend it on the one shot that sells the idea. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Feature Film, Trailer / Teaser, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Action, Shonen Battle (anime), Sports Anime, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Mecha (anime), Superhero **Avoid when:** On slow motion it adds nothing the eye can see; you pay the cost and get no result on screen. **Prompt:** `animated on ones, a new drawing every single frame, ultra fluid weighty motion` **Yields to:** `anime.walking_on_twos` — Ordinary motion: the eight-frame economy carries it. `anime.on_ones` ### The Hold / Still Frame **Also called:** held cel, freeze on a key drawing **What it is:** A single drawing held on screen for a second or more with no change at all, sometimes without even a blink. The shot becomes a hanging image. It differs from the Hold or Ma in the time chapter, where the shot keeps running with small live movement inside it: here there is no motion whatsoever, because it is one drawing held. **Effect on the audience:** Stops time. The viewer studies the drawing itself and gets room to feel the emotion instead of chasing the action. **Used for and where it works best:** Straight after the finishing blow, on a face that has just heard the bad news, or on the hero pose before the fight starts. In dramatic anime hold it until it becomes slightly uncomfortable; in a trailer use it as the stop before the title card. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Music Video, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Drama, Seinen (mature anime), Mecha (anime), Tragedy, Action, Psychological / Arthouse **Avoid when:** Held over information the viewer already got, it reads as dead air. And a weak drawing is the wrong one to hold, because the freeze exposes every flaw in it; the exception is a deliberately crude style where the roughness is the voice. **Prompt:** `anime style, a single held key drawing frozen on screen, no motion at all, ambient sound only` **Yields to:** `time.ma_hold` — The pause should keep running with live movement. `anime.hold` ### Run Cycle as a Shot **Also called:** run loop **What it is:** A shorter, harder loop than the walk: the body pitched forward, a full airborne beat between steps, the arms cutting the air. Usually on twos or ones. **Effect on the audience:** Urgency and drive. Running turns a scene from a state into an objective: there is something to reach before it is too late. **Used for and where it works best:** The run to the battlefield, chasing a departing train, fleeing danger, and the final run in a romance toward the person before they leave. In sports anime it is the shot that builds tension before the strike. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Music Video, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Sports Anime, Action, Romance, Coming of Age, Adventure, Thriller / Suspense **Avoid when:** A long run with no change in distance or angle loses its urgency and turns into running on the spot. **Prompt:** `anime style, run cycle with the body pitched forward and a clear airborne frame, background streaking past` **Yields to:** `kids.walk_loop` — The travel must sustain: loop in place, move the background. `anime.run_cycle` ### Walking on Twos **Also called:** eight frame step, standard TV walk **What it is:** The standard economy formula: four drawings per step held on twos, eight frames per step, with the background sliding behind. **Effect on the audience:** A natural looking walk for less than half the cost. The regular beat gives the scene a calm, ordered pulse. **Used for and where it works best:** Every ordinary walk in a TV episode: coming home from school, entering a room, crossing a street. Change the frames per step to change the mood of the walk, faster for anger and slower for exhaustion. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Slice of Life, Coming of Age, Drama, Comedy, Family, Shojo (anime romance), Romance **Avoid when:** The same frames per step in every scene makes all the walking mechanical and emotionless. **Prompt:** `anime style, standard four drawing walk held on twos, eight frames per step, calm steady pace` **Yields to:** `anime.on_ones` — The step must be felt in the body. `anime.walking_on_twos` ### Talking Heads with a Background Pan **Also called:** walk and talk on a scrolling background **What it is:** Two characters walk side by side in profile on a short cycle, the background slides past, and an entire dialogue scene plays out over this one shot. **Effect on the audience:** Makes a long dialogue watchable without a single cut. The continuous movement keeps it from feeling static. **Used for and where it works best:** Friendship, confession and exposition scenes in school and slice of life anime. Keep it in profile so both faces read, and let the background change mood as the conversation turns, from street to riverbank when it gets personal. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Slice of Life, Coming of Age, Shojo (anime romance), Romance, Drama, Comedy, Shonen Battle (anime) **Avoid when:** A very long dialogue on one shot goes flat; cut to a close up on the line that matters. **Prompt:** `anime style, two students walking side by side in profile, scrolling riverside background, both faces visible, conversational pace` **Yields to:** `size.cu` — The line that matters needs the face. `anime.talking_heads_bg_pan` ### Three Position Mouth Flap **Also called:** three mouth shapes, A I U flap **What it is:** Speech is drawn with very few mouth shapes: closed, half open, open. They alternate on the rhythm of the voice rather than on individual phonemes. **Effect on the audience:** Produces convincing speech at almost no cost and keeps attention on the eyes and the voice rather than the lips. **Used for and where it works best:** Every dialogue scene in TV anime, and any dub, because a small shape set fits any language. Add one or two extra shapes only on a very tight close up where the line is pivotal. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Explainer, AI-Generated Clip | genres: all **Avoid when:** On an extreme close up of the mouth the mismatch with the track becomes obvious, and it does not work for singing, which needs real sync. **Prompt:** `anime style, simple three shape mouth flap on the dialogue, eyes doing the acting, minimal facial motion` **Yields to:** `dubbing.bilabial_lipsync_alignment` — Singing, or a close-up on the mouth. `anime.mouth_flap_three` ### Eye Blink Cycle **Also called:** blink, two frame blink **What it is:** Three or four drawings that close and open the eye, dropped in at irregular intervals over any otherwise held shot. **Effect on the audience:** Brings a dead drawing back to life. A blink is the smallest possible signal that this is a living, thinking being. **Used for and where it works best:** On every long held shot that keeps running, and specifically before the important line - a hold held for effect (`anime.hold`) drops the blink on purpose, because no blink is the shock - where one slow blink announces a decision. Two quick blinks read as confusion, and no blink at all reads as shock or as a non human presence. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, AI-Generated Clip | genres: all **Avoid when:** Perfectly regular blinks feel mechanical, and in horror you withhold the blink when you want the face to frighten. **Prompt:** `anime style, held close up with occasional natural blinks at irregular intervals, everything else motionless` `anime.blink_cycle` ### Line Boil **Also called:** boiling line, wobbling outline **What it is:** The character outline never settles: it is redrawn slightly differently on every drawing, so the shape ripples and boils even when nothing moves. **Effect on the audience:** Reminds the viewer that a human hand made this. It reads as warmth and as unease at the same time. **Used for and where it works best:** The deliberately handmade look in short films, experimental work and music videos, and in scenes where a character is psychologically unstable. In kids content it reads as sketchbook drawing, which pulls a child closer to the image. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Short Film, Music Video, Experimental / Art Film, Kids Content, Anime (Japanese 2D), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Surreal / Absurdist, Psychological / Arthouse, Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Drama, Dark Comedy / Satire **Avoid when:** In work that needs precision and polish, a product ad or a glossy series, the boil reads as a production fault. **Prompt:** `anime style with heavy line boil, the outlines wobbling and redrawn every frame, handmade sketchbook feel` **Yields to:** `anime.flat_cel_shading` — Work needing polish: a product ad, a glossy series. `anime.line_boil` ### Rough Animation / Sketch Animation **Also called:** genga look, paint on glass look, rough key look **What it is:** The rough drawing is left uncleaned and unpainted: construction lines remain, brush strokes stay visible, and colour sometimes runs outside the line. **Effect on the audience:** Raw energy. The motion feels stronger because the eye sees the effort itself, and the emotion arrives unmediated. **Used for and where it works best:** The peak of a psychological fight or an emotional collapse, and passages where a character shifts into another state. The show Mob Psycho 100 made this look famous in its psychic outbursts; use it when you want to break the visual contract of your own series for a few seconds. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Short Film, Music Video, Experimental / Art Film, Trailer / Teaser, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Psychological / Arthouse, Action, Shonen Battle (anime), Surreal / Absurdist, Seinen (mature anime), Drama, Tragedy **Avoid when:** Used with no narrative reason it reads as an unfinished shot, and do not stretch it: raw drawing tires the eye fast. **Prompt:** `anime style, rough unclean key animation, visible construction lines and loose paint strokes outside the outline, explosive energy` **Yields to:** `anime.line_boil` — The handmade feel must run long without tiring the eye. `anime.rough_animation` ### Bank Footage / Stock Transformation Sequence **Also called:** stock footage, transformation sequence, bank system **What it is:** One sequence animated once at very high quality and reused identically in every episode: the transformation, the signature attack, the mecha launch. **Effect on the audience:** It becomes a ritual. The audience waits for it and knows it by heart, and the repetition itself turns into pleasure rather than boredom. **Used for and where it works best:** Magical girl and mecha series above all, and any weekly show that needs a guaranteed peak every episode. Build it so the edit can shorten or extend it to fit the running time, and change one small detail in the final episode so the audience feels the world has shifted. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Magical Girl (anime), Mecha (anime), Shonen Battle (anime), Superhero, Fantasy / Epic, Action, Family **Avoid when:** If it runs too long it turns into filler and the audience skips it, and in a feature it does not work at all, where repetition reads as laziness. **Prompt:** `anime style, full transformation sequence, ribbons of light wrapping the body, final costume reveal pose, identical every time` `anime.bank_footage` ### Radial Speed Lines / Focus Lines **Also called:** focus lines, zoom lines, burst lines **What it is:** Lines radiating outward in all directions from a single point in frame, usually a face, an eye or the object that matters. **Effect on the audience:** Forces the eye onto the centre. It reads as shock or sudden realisation, as if the whole world has been pulled toward that one point. **Used for and where it works best:** A face reacting to news, the reveal of an opponent, the moment of decision. In comedy push it to absurdity for the punchline, and in shonen lay it under the decisive line while the drawing is held. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Trailer / Teaser, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Comedy, Sports Anime, Action, Shojo (anime romance), Isekai (anime), Magical Girl (anime) **Avoid when:** In a quiet realistic scene it breaks belief and turns drama into a joke. **Prompt:** `anime style, radial focus lines bursting from the centre of the frame onto a shocked face, held drawing` **Yields to:** `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` — Quiet realistic scene: the reaction must stay believable. `anime.speed_lines_radial` ### Multiples **Also called:** multiple limbs, repeated image, echo drawing **What it is:** The same limb or the same body drawn two or five times inside one frame at successive positions, like a long exposure photograph. **Effect on the audience:** Delivers speed and power with no extra drawings. The eye reads the entire path at once. **Used for and where it works best:** A flurry of punches, a beating wing, a sword cutting three times in one beat. In comedy the same device becomes legs whirring absurdly fast, and in sports it goes on a bat or a striking foot. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Martial Arts / Wuxia, Comedy, Action, Sports Anime, Superhero, Family **Avoid when:** Too many copies over a busy background turns the frame into unreadable clutter. **Prompt:** `anime style, multiple overlapping copies of the arm in one frame showing the path of a punch flurry` **Yields to:** `anime.silhouette_flat_action` — Busy background: flatten it so the copies read. `anime.multiples` ### Overshoot **Also called:** overshoot and settle, moving hold **What it is:** The motion passes slightly beyond its end point and then comes back to it. The hand reaches past the target and settles onto it. **Effect on the audience:** Makes the stop feel alive instead of mechanical. The motion acquires spring and life. **Used for and where it works best:** The end of any gesture, head turn or raised blade: a small overshoot then a settle. In comedy exaggerate the overshoot until the movement itself is funny, and in kids anime it gives characters a likeable bouncy quality. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), 3D CG Animation, Kids Content, Drama Series Episode, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Shonen Battle (anime), Slice of Life, Action, Rom-Com **Avoid when:** In a serious or formal scene, a meeting, a courtroom, a religious rite, the bounce undercuts the gravity. **Prompt:** `anime style, the raised sword overshoots its stopping point by a few degrees and settles back` `anime.overshoot` ### Squash and Stretch **Also called:** squash, stretch **What it is:** The body compresses on impact and stretches on acceleration, while its overall volume stays the same so it neither grows nor shrinks. **Effect on the audience:** Creates elasticity and substance. The object gains a tangible material: a rubber ball, a fleshy cheek, a living body. **Used for and where it works best:** Jumping, landing, impact and comic faces. In kids content push it hard so everything feels soft and safe; in realistic anime apply a tiny amount, on cheeks and shoulders only. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Anime (Japanese 2D), 3D CG Animation, Kids Content, Commercial / TVC, Drama Series Episode, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Fairy Tale, Shonen Battle (anime), Action, Rom-Com **Avoid when:** On a rigid object, a sword, armour, a metal mecha, it destroys credibility, and in serious drama it turns the scene into a cartoon. **Prompt:** `anime style, strong squash on the landing and stretch on the launch, volume preserved, bouncy cartoon physics` **Yields to:** `move.impact_shake` — Rigid body, sword, armour or mecha. `anime.squash_stretch` ### The Beam Clash **Also called:** beam struggle, energy clash **What it is:** Two energy blasts meet in the middle of frame and grind against each other at a single point: exploding light, cracking ground, the camera usually side on so both sides read. **Effect on the audience:** Turns the fight into a balance: whose will is stronger. The tension lives in the meeting point, and in which way it is sliding. **Used for and where it works best:** The climax of a shonen, mecha or magical girl battle. Slide the meeting point slowly toward the loser and cut between the two faces in turn so the viewer feels the outcome being decided. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Music Video, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Mecha (anime), Magical Girl (anime), Superhero, Action, Fantasy / Epic, Sci-Fi **Avoid when:** If it runs long with no movement in the meeting point it becomes static light and the tension collapses. **Prompt:** `anime style, two energy beams colliding at a single point in the centre of frame, light exploding outward, the ground cracking` `anime.beam_clash` ### The Kanada Dragon **Also called:** Kanada dragon smoke, ribbon explosion **What it is:** The explosion, smoke or energy is drawn as a long twisting body, a ribbon or dragon coiling through space, with hard edges and regular rings. **Effect on the audience:** Turns an effect from a natural phenomenon into a creature. The explosion acquires intent and direction and travels the frame like a performer. **Used for and where it works best:** A large explosion you want to lead the eye from point to point, or an energy wave coiling around a character before it strikes. Excellent in mecha, in magical battles and in title sequences. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Trailer / Teaser, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Music Video, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Mecha (anime), Fantasy / Epic, Shonen Battle (anime), Action, Sci-Fi, Magical Girl (anime), Surreal / Absurdist **Avoid when:** In a show built on realistic effects, the dragon reads as if it came from another series. **Prompt:** `anime style, the explosion drawn as a long coiling ribbon of smoke and light twisting through space with hard edged rings` **Yields to:** `anime.yutapon_cubes` — A blow onto ground or armour, not a travelling blast. `anime.kanada_dragon` ### Yutapon Cubes **Also called:** debris cubes, Nakamura cubes **What it is:** Debris shaped as regular cubes and geometric slabs flying out of an impact instead of realistic dust and shards. It is the signature of animator Yutaka Nakamura. **Effect on the audience:** Makes the impact readable and designed. The cubes give the force scale, depth and direction, where dust would give mush. **Used for and where it works best:** When ground, wall or armour takes a heavy blow, especially in a wide shot where the scale of the destruction has to land. Excellent in shonen and mecha, and in short form it delivers one readable, powerful shot. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), 3D CG Animation, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Mecha (anime), Action, Superhero, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Monster / Kaiju, Sci-Fi **Avoid when:** In realistic or historical work the regular cubes look artificial. **Prompt:** `anime style, impact throwing out geometric cube shaped debris chunks instead of realistic dust, strong depth and scale` **Yields to:** `cg.fluid_sim` — Realistic or historical work: simulate the dust. `anime.yutapon_cubes` ### Silhouette Action Against Flat Colour **Also called:** silhouette fight, flat colour action **What it is:** The figures are drawn as solid black silhouettes against a single flat colour field, red, orange or white, with no internal detail at all. **Effect on the audience:** Makes the motion itself the subject. The eye reads only shape and rhythm, so the action feels cleaner and stronger. **Used for and where it works best:** A fast fight on a small budget, a memory or a legend being told, and title sequences. In drawn heritage documentary it is an excellent way to show an ancient battle with no blood and no disputed historical detail. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Music Video, Trailer / Teaser, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Samurai / Chanbara, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Mythology / Ancient Epic, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Action, Historical / Biopic, Shonen Battle (anime) **Avoid when:** If the characters have similar shapes, silhouette makes them indistinguishable and the viewer loses track. And note what this card specifies on both ends: pure black against a flat saturated field, with no internal detail anywhere to soften it, moving at the speed of a fight. The legibility question is this card's and it keeps it; how fast large shapes may sweep that much contrast, and when it has to stop, are `safety.photosensitive_flash`. **Prompt:** `anime style, pure black silhouettes fighting against a flat red background, no internal detail, strong readable shapes` **Yields to:** `anime.flat_cel_shading` — Similar body shapes stop reading as silhouettes. `anime.silhouette_flat_action` ### Extreme Foreshortening **Also called:** fist to camera, exaggerated perspective **What it is:** The limb pointed at camera is drawn far larger than its true size: the fist fills half the frame while the body behind it shrinks away unrealistically fast. **Effect on the audience:** Puts the viewer inside the blow. It feels as if the thing is coming at you, not at the opponent. **Used for and where it works best:** The punch toward camera, the sword thrust at us, the hand reaching out to save or to strangle. In shonen and vertical short form it is the opening shot that stops the thumb, and in mecha it gives the machine hand enormous scale. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Trailer / Teaser, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Drama Series Episode, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Action, Mecha (anime), Martial Arts / Wuxia, Superhero, Horror, Monster / Kaiju **Avoid when:** If the distortion goes so far that the body stops reading, it becomes a drawing error rather than a style. **Prompt:** `anime style, extreme foreshortening with the fist filling the foreground and the body shrinking rapidly behind it` `anime.extreme_foreshortening` ### The Punch Through the Frame **Also called:** breaking the frame, hitting the camera **What it is:** The character strikes toward camera until the limb covers the lens, or the frame border itself cracks and becomes part of the action. **Effect on the audience:** Breaks the viewing wall. The viewer flips from spectator to target. **Used for and where it works best:** The end of an opening sequence, the last shot of a trailer, the first shot of a vertical reel. In comedy use it when the character is annoyed at the camera itself, and in shonen as the cut point into the title card. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Trailer / Teaser, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Music Video, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Action, Comedy, Superhero, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Surreal / Absurdist, Dark Comedy / Satire **Avoid when:** In realistic drama it breaks belief in the world, and do not repeat it: once an episode is plenty. **Prompt:** `anime style, the fist thrust straight into the lens until it fills the frame, cracks spreading across the picture edge` **Yields to:** `anime.extreme_foreshortening` — Realistic drama, or a second use in one episode. `anime.punch_through_frame` ### The Power Up Aura **Also called:** energy aura, ki aura, transformation glow **What it is:** Light rising around the body as flame, a column or waves, with the ground shaking, the hair lifting and pebbles floating upward. **Effect on the audience:** Announces a change in power without a word of dialogue. The audience understands the rules just changed and that what follows will be bigger. **Used for and where it works best:** The awakening or transformation beat in shonen, and the start of a second phase in a fight. Build the aura in stages, tremor then floating gravel then light then burst, and let the sound lead the picture by a quarter second so it hits harder. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Music Video, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Mecha (anime), Magical Girl (anime), Superhero, Fantasy / Epic, Action, Isekai (anime) **Avoid when:** If every character auras up every episode the escalation stops meaning anything, and in realistic drama it has no place at all. **Prompt:** `anime style, energy aura erupting around the character, gravel floating upward, hair rising, ground cracking, column of light` **Yields to:** `anime.light_stripe_eyes` — Realistic register: show the change in the eyes. `anime.power_up_aura` ### The Naruto Run **Also called:** ninja run, arms back run **What it is:** A run with the torso pitched hard forward and both arms stretched straight back behind the body, with no arm swing. It became famous through the series Naruto and now carries its name. **Effect on the audience:** Makes a character feel faster and less human. The silhouette is sharp and readable from far away, and the body reads as cutting through air. **Used for and where it works best:** A ninja, an infiltrator or a superhuman running through forest or across rooftops. It works best in profile or from above, and in comedy anime it plays as a known joke because the audience recognises it. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Meme / Comedy Edit, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Action, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy / Epic, Isekai (anime) **Avoid when:** In realistic work it looks silly and wrecks a serious scene, and it now carries meme baggage, so watch for unintended comedy. **Prompt:** `anime style, ninja run with the torso pitched forward and both arms trailing straight back, side view, trees blurring past` **Yields to:** `anime.run_cycle` — Realistic work, or where the meme reading intrudes. `anime.naruto_run` ### The Micro Expression **Also called:** subtle acting, small expression beat **What it is:** A very small change in the face: a brow lifting a fraction, the eyes flicking sideways, a lip pressing. It is drawn with unusual care and more frames than a static shot would normally get. Kyoto Animation is known for it. **Effect on the audience:** Gives the character an inner life. The viewer reads a feeling the dialogue never states and attaches to the person rather than to the plot. **Used for and where it works best:** The small lie, hidden jealousy, the confession that never gets spoken. In slice of life, shojo and drama it is the difference between a drawn character and a living one. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Feature Film, Short Film, 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Slice of Life, Shojo (anime romance), Drama, Romance, Coming of Age, Seinen (mature anime), Melodrama **Avoid when:** In a wide shot it is invisible, so only spend it in close ups, and in fast action it is lost for nothing. **Prompt:** `anime style, close up with a tiny expression change, the brow lifting slightly and the eyes flicking away, everything else still` **Yields to:** `anime.speed_lines_radial` — Wide shot or fast action: the small beat is invisible. `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` ### The Shinkai Light and Sky **Also called:** anime lens flare, light bloom sky **What it is:** A highly detailed painted sky with layered clouds, coloured lens flare, shafts of light crossing the frame, and reflections on glass and water. It is associated with Makoto Shinkai. **Effect on the audience:** Produces nostalgia and a heavy beauty. An ordinary place, a train platform, a classroom, becomes emotionally charged by the light alone. **Used for and where it works best:** Transition shots in romance and youth drama, and the beat of longing or parting. Put the flare on the shot you want remembered, and let the sky change colour as the character's feelings change. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Feature Film, Music Video, Drama Series Episode, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Romance, Coming of Age, Shojo (anime romance), Drama, Slice of Life, Fantasy / Epic, Melodrama **Avoid when:** Flare on every shot tires the image and kills the specialness, and in a harsh or wartime scene too much beauty contradicts the content. **Prompt:** `anime style, highly detailed layered clouds, warm coloured lens flare across the frame, light shafts and reflections on glass` **Yields to:** `anime.lens_flare_2d` — You want the camera signature, not the whole painted sky. `anime.shinkai_light` ### The Ghibli Pause (Ma) **Also called:** ma, the empty beat **What it is:** A deliberate beat with no event, no dialogue and no plot movement: the character breathes, looks, says nothing. Hayao Miyazaki described it as the emptiness between two claps. **Effect on the audience:** Lets the viewer catch up and feel. Without this emptiness, relentless tension numbs the audience and nothing retains meaning. **Used for and where it works best:** Straight after a powerful scene, before a large decision, and in any family or heritage film that needs to breathe. Place it deliberately: one long shot of a character looking into the distance, or an empty landscape with natural sound. **Best in:** formats: Feature Film, Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Short Film, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Documentary Feature, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Family, Drama, Slice of Life, Fantasy / Epic, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Coming of Age, Adventure **Avoid when:** Placed with no build before it, it reads as boredom rather than breath, and in vertical short form there is no room for it. **Prompt:** `anime style, a long quiet beat with no action, the character simply breathing and looking out at the landscape` **Yields to:** `anime.hold` — The pause should stop dead on one drawing. `anime.ghibli_ma` ### The Food Detail **Also called:** food animation, cooking beat **What it is:** A close shot of food being cooked or eaten: an egg frying with its edges curling, bread torn open with steam rising, soup being poured. The motion is animated with unusual care. **Effect on the audience:** Opens the viewer's senses. Food is the fastest route to warmth, home and safety, and it makes a drawn world feel tangible. **Used for and where it works best:** The family at the table, a starving character who finally eats, the welcome after a journey. In slice of life and family anime it is a trademark, and in heritage work one shot of food presents an entire culture with no exposition. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Feature Film, Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Commercial / TVC, Heritage / Historical Documentary, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Family, Slice of Life, Coming of Age, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Drama, Fairy Tale, Adventure **Avoid when:** Carelessly drawn food is actively unappetising and ruins the shot, and do not stretch it beyond what the scene needs. **Prompt:** `anime style, close up of an egg frying, edges curling and bubbling, steam rising, warm morning light, loving detail` `anime.ghibli_food` ### The Kon Match Cut **Also called:** graphic match cut, Satoshi Kon cut **What it is:** A cut between two completely different places or times in which the shape, the movement and the composition match exactly across the join. Satoshi Kon developed it into a signature. **Effect on the audience:** Erases the boundary between scenes. The viewer crosses without feeling the cut, so time turns liquid and untrustworthy. **Used for and where it works best:** Moving between present and memory, reality and dream, two stages of a life. In psychological features and drawn biography it is the fastest way to tell years in seconds. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Feature Film, Short Film, Music Video, Video Essay, Trailer / Teaser, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Psychological / Arthouse, Surreal / Absurdist, Drama, Mystery / Whodunit, Historical / Biopic, Tragedy, Seinen (mature anime) **Avoid when:** If the match is imprecise the cut reads as an editing error, and repeated too often the viewer starts predicting it and the effect dies. **Prompt:** `anime style, a graphic match cut where a woman running in a hallway becomes the same woman running across a battlefield, identical pose and framing` **Yields to:** `cut.motion_match` — The shapes will not align; match the movement. `anime.kon_match_cut` ### Emotion Icons **Also called:** sweat drop, anger vein, cross popping vein **What it is:** Drawn symbols placed on or beside the face: the big sweat drop for embarrassment, the crossed anger vein on the forehead, falling gloom lines, the nose bubble for sleep. **Effect on the audience:** Communicate a complex feeling instantly and without dialogue. The audience knows the dictionary and reads the symbol faster than the expression. **Used for and where it works best:** Comedy, slice of life and everyday awkwardness. Put the symbol on a side character's reaction so you get the laugh without cutting to their face, and in kids content it is the clearest way to teach an emotion. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Meme / Comedy Edit, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Slice of Life, Rom-Com, Shojo (anime romance), Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Isekai (anime) **Avoid when:** In a serious scene they break the tone, and with an audience unfamiliar with the vocabulary the symbol just confuses. **Prompt:** `anime style, a large sweat drop on the side of the head and a crossed anger vein on the forehead, comedic reaction beat` **Yields to:** `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` — Serious scene, or an audience that cannot read symbols. `anime.emotion_icons` ### Blush Lines **Also called:** blush, cheek lines **What it is:** Short diagonal strokes or a pink wash on the cheeks and across the nose, added over the face with no other change in the drawing. **Effect on the audience:** Announces fluster, attraction or heat in a single beat. The face itself can stay neutral while the blush does the talking. **Used for and where it works best:** A confession, an accidental touch, an exchanged look in shojo and romance. Grade the intensity: two strokes for mild fluster, a fully red face for collapse, and the silence after it doubles the effect. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Music Video, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shojo (anime romance), Romance, Rom-Com, Comedy, Slice of Life, Coming of Age, Family **Avoid when:** A blush on every shot reduces the character to a cliche with no range, and in serious drama it plays as childish. **Prompt:** `anime style, two diagonal blush strokes appearing across the cheeks and nose as the character looks away` **Yields to:** `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` — Serious drama: the symbol plays as childish. `anime.blush_lines` ### Sweat and the Nervous Shake **Also called:** nervous tremble, cold sweat **What it is:** Beads of sweat running at the temple and neck, the body or the whole frame trembling in small fast vibrations, with the pupil contracting. **Effect on the audience:** Physical fear. The viewer reads the danger off the character's body before ever seeing its source. **Used for and where it works best:** When a character realises the opponent is stronger, is caught in a lie, or hears something behind the door. In horror and shonen, apply the tremble to the whole frame so the viewer shares it. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Trailer / Teaser, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Horror, Thriller / Suspense, Shonen Battle (anime), Psychological Horror, Seinen (mature anime), Mystery / Whodunit, Action **Avoid when:** Overdone sweat tips into accidental comedy, and in a cold quiet scene it stops making sense. **Prompt:** `anime style, cold sweat running down the temple, the pupil shrinking, a small fast tremble on the whole frame` **Yields to:** `anime.blink_cycle` — A cold quiet scene: withhold the blink instead. `anime.sweat_nervous_shake` ### The Shojo Sparkle Background **Also called:** sparkle screen, flower background, bishie sparkles **What it is:** The real background is erased and replaced with sparkles, stars, flowers and a pink or lilac haze, sometimes with soft radiating lines. **Effect on the audience:** Turns the moment into a daydream. The viewer understands this is the character's view of the situation, not the situation itself. **Used for and where it works best:** The arrival of the love interest, a confession, a daydream. In shojo it is the native language, and in comedy apply it absurdly to a character who does not deserve it for the joke. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Kids Content, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Music Video, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shojo (anime romance), Romance, Rom-Com, Comedy, Magical Girl (anime), Coming of Age, Fairy Tale **Avoid when:** In serious or realistic work it destroys the tone, and repeated too often it becomes meaningless wallpaper. **Prompt:** `anime style, the background replaced with floating sparkles, roses and a soft pink haze as he turns and smiles` **Yields to:** `anime.bloom_hair` — Serious or realistic work: use backlight, not sparkles. `anime.shojo_sparkle_bg` ### Screen Tone **Also called:** halftone dots, manga tone **What it is:** A ready made pattern of grey dots or lines, borrowed from the manga page, laid over part of the image in place of a colour gradient. **Effect on the audience:** Brings the texture of paper into animation. The image feels printed and handmade, and time feels arrested on a page. **Used for and where it works best:** Memory, dream and explanation shots, impact frames, and any moment you want to salute the source manga. In titles and chapter breaks it gives strong visual identity for very little money. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Drama Series Episode, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Trailer / Teaser, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Seinen (mature anime), Shonen Battle (anime), Shojo (anime romance), Comedy, Mystery / Whodunit, Horror, Psychological / Arthouse **Avoid when:** Dots that are too large make the image muddy and irritating, and in glossy full colour work it feels imported from somewhere else. **Prompt:** `anime style with manga halftone screen tone shading over the shadows, printed paper texture, limited greys` **Yields to:** `anime.benday_dots` — Full-colour work: the colour print register. `anime.screen_tone` ### Flat Cel Shading **Also called:** two tone shading, hard edged shadow **What it is:** The shadow is drawn as a single shape in a single colour with a hard edge and no gradient. A base colour and a shadow colour, sometimes a third for a hot highlight. **Effect on the audience:** Keeps the image clean, readable and instantly legible. Shape matters more than material, and a face reads at any distance. **Used for and where it works best:** The standard anime and cartoon look. Move the shadow edge itself to change mood: half the face in shadow for threat, a low soft shadow shape for warmth. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), 3D CG Animation, Kids Content, Drama Series Episode, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: all **Avoid when:** If the work needs rich material feel, leather, rusted metal, heavy cloth, flat shading strips it out. **Prompt:** `anime style, flat two tone cel shading, hard edged shadow shapes, no gradients, clean readable colour` **Yields to:** `cg.arcane_painterly` — The work needs material: leather, rust, heavy cloth. `anime.flat_cel_shading` ### Flashback Desaturation **Also called:** memory grade, faded flashback **What it is:** The memory is played with drained colour pushed toward brown or grey, with darkened edges and sometimes grain or blown out light. **Effect on the audience:** Tells the viewer this is the past with no caption needed, and the fading itself carries a sense of loss. **Used for and where it works best:** A childhood memory, the death of a parent, the origin of the hero's motivation. In shonen it lands mid fight as the reason to keep standing, and in heritage work it separates ancient time from the present. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Feature Film, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Docudrama / Reenactment, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Drama, Tragedy, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Historical / Biopic, Melodrama, Seinen (mature anime) **Avoid when:** The same treatment on every memory becomes mechanical, so sometimes mark the flashback with sound or framing instead of colour. **Prompt:** `anime style, flashback look, drained sepia colour, darkened vignette edges, soft blown out highlights` **Yields to:** `anime.screen_tone` — Every memory graded alike: mark it by texture. `anime.flashback_desaturation` ### The Light Stripe Across the Eyes **Also called:** eye band, light bar on the eyes **What it is:** A narrow horizontal band of light cutting the face at eye level with the rest in shadow, or the reverse, the face lit and a band of shadow across the eyes. **Effect on the audience:** Isolates the eyes from the face so they carry the whole message. It reads as threat, resolve or madness depending on the look itself. **Used for and where it works best:** The villain announcing intent, the hero before the charge, the character who has changed after a trauma. In noir and seinen, motivate the light with a real source, a gap in a blind, a door crack, so the scene stays grounded. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Noir / Neo-Noir, Seinen (mature anime), Thriller / Suspense, Shonen Battle (anime), Crime / Procedural, Horror, Psychological / Arthouse **Avoid when:** Repeated on every close up it loses weight and becomes decoration, and in an open daylight scene nothing motivates it. **Prompt:** `anime style, a narrow horizontal band of light across the eyes with the rest of the face in deep shadow` **Yields to:** `size.italian` — Open daylight: isolate the eyes by framing, not light. `anime.light_stripe_eyes` ### The Superflat Pastel Dream **Also called:** flat pastel dreamscape, candy dream look **What it is:** A scene in light pastel colour with almost no shadow, no depth and simple clean edged shapes. The space reads as a poster rather than a world. **Effect on the audience:** Separates the shot from reality without frightening. It reads as a gentle dream, a sanitised memory, or a world inside a head. **Used for and where it works best:** A dream sequence, an insert song passage inside an episode, a music video. In kids content it is easy on the eye and easy to read, and in psychological anime contrast that sweetness with harsh content to deepen the unease. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Music Video, Kids Content, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Lyric Video, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Surreal / Absurdist, Psychological / Arthouse, Magical Girl (anime), Shojo (anime romance), Preschool / Early Learning, Fairy Tale, Family **Avoid when:** If a scene needs threat or spatial depth, flattening it weakens it. **Prompt:** `anime style, flat pastel dreamscape, almost no shadows, simple clean shapes, soft candy colour, no depth` **Yields to:** `anime.fisheye_2d` — The dream must carry threat or depth. `anime.superflat_pastel_dream` ### Drawn Onomatopoeia **Also called:** sound effect text, on screen sfx lettering **What it is:** The sound word is drawn inside the frame as part of the picture: large lettering that moves with the action, swelling on the hit, trembling with the shake. **Effect on the audience:** Makes sound visible. The feel turns graphic and direct, and the printed page enters the screen. **Used for and where it works best:** Comedy and youth anime, and any moment where you want sound to become part of the design. In short form watched with the sound off it is an excellent way to deliver the audio to the viewer. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Meme / Comedy Edit, Kids Content, Drama Series Episode, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Shonen Battle (anime), Slice of Life, Dark Comedy / Satire, Sports Anime, Family, Surreal / Absurdist **Avoid when:** In a language your audience cannot read it is decoration nobody parses, and in serious drama it breaks belief. **Prompt:** `anime style, large hand drawn sound effect lettering integrated into the frame, swelling and shaking with the impact` Text treatment: seen, not read (`textimg.read_or_seen`); where the sound word must read letter for letter, it is set as a layer over the generated frame (`textimg.repair_not_regenerate`). **Yields to:** `vertical.captions` — The audience cannot read the lettering's language. `anime.drawn_onomatopoeia` ### Fisheye on 2D **Also called:** drawn wide angle distortion, bulge perspective **What it is:** Straight lines are drawn curved, the centre swells and the edges are pulled away, imitating a fisheye lens, all of it drawn by hand. **Effect on the audience:** Warps the world, so the viewer feels instability or a non human point of view. The distortion itself says something is wrong. **Used for and where it works best:** The view of a collapsing character, the point of view of a monster, a security camera or a door peephole, the moment of vertigo. In psychological horror increase the distortion gradually across the scene rather than switching it on at once. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Music Video, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Game Cinematic / Gameplay, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Psychological Horror, Horror, Surreal / Absurdist, Psychological / Arthouse, Seinen (mature anime), Thriller / Suspense, Comedy **Avoid when:** Too much distortion makes faces accidentally funny, and in a calm naturalistic scene there is no reason for it. **Prompt:** `anime style, hand drawn fisheye distortion, straight lines bowing outward, the centre bulging, edges stretched` **Yields to:** `anime.line_boil` — Faces must stay readable; unsettle the line instead. `anime.fisheye_2d` ### 2D Depth of Field Simulation **Also called:** drawn bokeh, layer blur depth **What it is:** Foreground and background are drawn or treated with graded softness according to distance, sometimes with soft light circles added, so the shot reads as if shot on a fast lens. **Effect on the audience:** Gives drawings cinematic depth and isolates the character from the world. The image reads as more expensive and closer to live action. **Used for and where it works best:** An emotional close up at night or in rain, a city seen through a window, a romantic scene. In contemporary feature anime it is the standard, and in short form it lifts a face out of a busy background. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Feature Film, Drama Series Episode, Music Video, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Romance, Drama, Seinen (mature anime), Coming of Age, Slice of Life, Noir / Neo-Noir, Cyberpunk **Avoid when:** Blurring everything but the face throws away the world you paid to paint, and in a deliberately flat style it contradicts itself. **Prompt:** `anime style, shallow depth of field, soft bokeh circles in the neon background, only the face in sharp focus` **Yields to:** `anime.bloom_hair` — A flat style, or a painted world worth keeping. `anime.dof_2d` ### Lens Flare on 2D **Also called:** drawn flare, anamorphic streak on animation **What it is:** A drawn or composited flare: a horizontal blue streak, a chain of coloured circles, or a star of light, travelling over the drawn image with the camera or the light source. **Effect on the audience:** Convinces the eye that a real camera is present. It adds realism, beauty and nostalgia at once. **Used for and where it works best:** Sunrise and sunset, sun between buildings, a reflection on water, an explosion. In romance and youth drama put it on the emotional peak shot, and in science fiction on artificial light sources. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Feature Film, Music Video, Commercial / TVC, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Romance, Coming of Age, Sci-Fi, Drama, Slice of Life, Fantasy / Epic, Cyberpunk **Avoid when:** On every shot it tires the eye and hides the drawing you paid for, and in a dark interior nothing motivates it. **Prompt:** `anime style, warm anamorphic lens flare streaking across the frame as the sun breaks between the buildings` **Yields to:** `anime.light_stripe_eyes` — Dark interior: motivate the light from the room. `anime.lens_flare_2d` ### Bloom on the Hair **Also called:** rim glow, hair light bleed **What it is:** The edge of the hair and shoulder is given a soft glow that bleeds into the background, the way strong backlight behaves on a real camera. **Effect on the audience:** Separates the character from the background and gives them a halo. The face feels warm and the person feels important. **Used for and where it works best:** An entrance, standing at a window or against a sunset, a confession beat. In shojo and romance it is the fastest way to make a character feel loved, and in mecha put it on metal so the machine reads as hot. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Music Video, Commercial / TVC, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shojo (anime romance), Romance, Drama, Slice of Life, Fantasy / Epic, Mecha (anime), Coming of Age **Avoid when:** Too strong and the glow eats the hair edge and destroys the drawing, and in a dark realistic scene it reads as fake. **Prompt:** `anime style, strong backlight blooming softly along the edge of the hair and shoulders, warm rim glow bleeding into the background` **Yields to:** `anime.dof_2d` — Dark realistic scene: separate by focus, not glow. `anime.bloom_hair` ### The Reflection in the Eye **Also called:** eye mirror shot, reflected reveal **What it is:** An extreme close up of the eye with what the character is seeing reflected inside it: fire, a face, an explosion, a knife. **Effect on the audience:** Shows cause and reaction in a single frame. The viewer sees the event and the response to it at the same instant. **Used for and where it works best:** The instant of terror, discovery or silent grief. In horror and shonen it replaces two cuts, the event then the face, saving time and doubling the intensity, and in heritage work the burning city reflected in a child's eye delivers the tragedy with no blood. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Drama Series Episode, Trailer / Teaser, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Horror, Shonen Battle (anime), Drama, Tragedy, War, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Thriller / Suspense **Avoid when:** If the reflection is drawn too small to read, the whole idea is lost, and do not repeat it: once an episode is enough. **Prompt:** `anime style, extreme close up of an eye with the burning city reflected clearly in the iris, pupil contracting` **Yields to:** `cut.reaction` — The reflection cannot be drawn large enough to read. `anime.eye_reflection` ### Toon Shading **Also called:** toon shader, NPR shading **What it is:** A rendering method that collapses the gradient into two or three hard edged bands and adds an outline, turning any 3D model into a drawing. **Effect on the audience:** Simplifies form and makes it readable. The image loses realism and gains identity and clarity. **Used for and where it works best:** Games, game cinematics, kids content and drawn style commercials. Keep a consistent apparent screen-space outline: taper the model-space line with distance only enough to prevent it thickening in wides. The style guide owns the near, mid and far line classes. Make the shadow a cool colour rather than black when that matches the approved palette. **Best in:** formats: 3D CG Animation, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Anime (Japanese 2D), Kids Content, Commercial / TVC, Explainer, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Shonen Battle (anime), Fantasy / Epic, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Comedy **Avoid when:** On a heavily detailed model, banded shading turns into a mess of lines. Simplify the model before you simplify the shading. **Prompt:** `anime style toon shading, two band hard edged shadows with a clean dark outline, flat readable colour` **Yields to:** `cg.arcane_painterly` — A detailed model you cannot simplify; paint it instead. `anime.toon_shading` ### The Ending Sequence Still Walk **Also called:** ED walk, quiet ending sequence **What it is:** The end sequence is built from held illustrations or a slow side on walk against a sliding background, in quiet colour with a slower song than the opening, carrying the crew credits. **Effect on the audience:** Brings the viewer down from the peak of the episode. The calm gives the emotion time to settle before the screen goes dark. **Used for and where it works best:** The end of every episode, and above all after an emotionally heavy one. Alter the ending on a pivotal episode, an empty background, a missing character, because the audience knows it by heart and will notice at once. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Drama Series Episode, Music Video, Lyric Video, Kids Content, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Slice of Life, Drama, Shojo (anime romance), Coming of Age, Shonen Battle (anime), Romance, Tragedy **Avoid when:** An ending with the same energy as the opening gives no descent and leaves the viewer wound up. **Prompt:** `anime style ending sequence, slow side on walk against a scrolling dusk background, muted colour, credits rising` **Yields to:** `end.credits_sequence` — Outside weekly anime: choose the credit design deliberately. `anime.ending_still_walk` ### The Next Episode Preview **Also called:** next time on, preview cut **What it is:** Fifteen to thirty seconds after the ending: fast shots from the next episode under one character's voice, closing on the episode title and a short line. **Effect on the audience:** Pulls the viewer into next week. A familiar voice makes the promise feel personal rather than promotional. **Used for and where it works best:** Every weekly series. Choose shots that raise a question instead of answering one, and in comedies let the preview itself be a joke unrelated to the episode, which has become a beloved convention. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Trailer / Teaser, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Mystery / Whodunit, Mecha (anime), Sports Anime, Comedy, Isekai (anime), Thriller / Suspense **Avoid when:** Revealing next week's climax kills it, and on a platform that drops a whole season at once its value drops sharply. **Prompt:** `anime style next episode preview, fast cuts under a character voice over, ending on the episode title card` Text treatment: the episode title card is set in the edit over a clean frame that leaves room for it (`textimg.text_safe_zone`). **Yields to:** `info.cliffhanger_reveal` — A whole season drops at once. `anime.next_episode_preview` ### The Character Introduction Card **Also called:** name card freeze, character title drop **What it is:** The shot freezes on the character in a strong pose and text drops in beside them: the name, the title, the ability or the rank, with a short sting and a colour field. **Effect on the audience:** Fixes the character in the viewer's memory in two seconds. The text confers weight and says this person matters. **Used for and where it works best:** A new opponent entering in shonen, the team roll call in sports anime, ability exposition in isekai. Keep the design identical across every character so it becomes a system the viewer learns. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Trailer / Teaser, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Sports Anime, Isekai (anime), Action, Fantasy / Epic, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Superhero **Avoid when:** Card too many characters in a short stretch and the viewer remembers none of them. **Prompt:** `anime style, freeze frame on the fighter in a strong pose with a name and rank card sliding in beside him on a flat colour field` **Yields to:** `char.defining_action_entrance` — Too many cards in a row: introduce by behaviour. `anime.character_intro_card` ### The Insert Song Montage **Also called:** insert song sequence, song over montage **What it is:** A full song plays inside the episode, not in the opening or ending, over a montage of dialogue free shots: memories, a battle, a journey, a parting. **Effect on the audience:** Lifts the scene to a higher emotional register. The music takes over the narration, so time compresses and feeling concentrates. **Used for and where it works best:** The episode climax or the end of an arc: the win after a loss, the goodbye, the return home. Cut on the musical phrases rather than on the action and keep all dialogue out. **The technique is not anime-only, and this file is a bad place to look for it.** Anime named it and uses it most consistently, but *"the song takes the film over for a stretch"* is the same construction in a documentary that gives three minutes to a lament, a drama that stops for a performance, and a heritage piece built around an anthem — and a live-action director following the package would never open a file called `anime-2d.md`. The rule that matters in every one of them is the same: **cut to the musical phrase, not to the action, and put no dialogue under it.** For the two joins at either end of such a passage — where narration stops and where it returns — see `soundscape.narration_song_handover` in Phase 4, and record which clock each shot is on in the **Timing src** cell of the Phase 3 shot table. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Music Video, Feature Film, Lyric Video, AI-Generated Clip, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Documentary Feature, Short Film, Video Essay | genres: Sports Anime, Shonen Battle (anime), Drama, Romance, Coming of Age, Tragedy, Melodrama, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Historical / Biopic, Musical **Avoid when:** Used every episode it loses its value and becomes filler, and do not bury important dialogue under it: the song will swallow it. **Prompt:** `anime style emotional montage with no dialogue, cuts landing on the musical phrases, memories intercut with the present` **Yields to:** `sync.instrumental_break_dialogue_window` — Dialogue must survive inside the song passage. `anime.insert_song_montage` ### The Attack Name Callout **Also called:** technique name shout, move name card **What it is:** The character shouts the name of the technique, and the name usually appears on screen in designed type with a light burst or an impact frame. **Effect on the audience:** Turns a blow into a named event with a history. The audience memorises the name, so the next time it appears becomes an appointment. **Used for and where it works best:** Battle, magical girl and game anime: the first appearance of an ability and its return at a decisive moment. Play it long and complete the first time, then shorten it on repeats so it does not stall the pace. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), Drama Series Episode, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), Trailer / Teaser, Kids Content, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Shonen Battle (anime), Magical Girl (anime), Mecha (anime), Superhero, Action, Martial Arts / Wuxia, Isekai (anime) **Avoid when:** If every blow gets a name and a shout the fight becomes a list, and in realistic seinen it breaks the tone. And the burst this card puts on the blow is a bright frame against a dark one, repeated through a fight: the rate it repeats at, and the point where it has to stop, are not this card's to set. They are `safety.photosensitive_flash`. **Prompt:** `anime style, the fighter shouting the technique name as designed lettering bursts across the frame with a light flash` Text treatment: the technique name is designed lettering composited in the edit, over a frame composed to receive it (`textimg.text_safe_zone`); the generator is not asked to spell it. `anime.attack_name_callout` ### Drawn Water **Also called:** hand drawn water, water cycle animation **What it is:** Water is drawn as defined shapes with white outlines and hard edges: the wave has a silhouette, the spray is separate droplets, the reflection is moving horizontal bands. **Effect on the audience:** Makes water readable and beautiful instead of a smear. The eye follows the shape, so it reads as movement and coolness. **Used for and where it works best:** Sea, river, rain, bathing, diving, and the moment of falling in. In family and heritage work water is what makes a place feel real, and in sports anime swimming needs its own spray layer. **Best in:** formats: Anime (Japanese 2D), 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Feature Film, Kids Content, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Drama Series Episode, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Family, Adventure, Slice of Life, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Sports Anime, Fantasy / Epic, Nature / Wildlife **Avoid when:** Soft gradient water inside a flat style looks imported and breaks the unity of the image. **Prompt:** `anime style hand drawn water, hard edged wave shapes with white outlines, separate droplets of spray, banded reflections` **Yields to:** `cg.fluid_sim` — A realistic or CG register rather than a flat one. `anime.drawn_water` ### Rubber Hose Animation **Also called:** rubber hose style, noodle limbs **What it is:** The style of nineteen twenties and thirties cartoons: arms and legs drawn as bending hoses with no elbow or knee, bodies built from circles, and white four fingered gloves. **Effect on the audience:** Makes movement liquid, musical and playful. A body with no bones makes everything possible and nothing painful. **Used for and where it works best:** Musical comedy, kids content, and anything reaching for the old black and white flavour. Lock every step to a musical beat, because the style was built on walking in time with the score. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Kids Content, Music Video, Commercial / TVC, Short Film, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Musical, Surreal / Absurdist, Fairy Tale, Dark Comedy / Satire **Avoid when:** If the work needs anatomy, realism or serious drama, this style cancels all three. **Prompt:** `nineteen thirties rubber hose cartoon style, bending noodle limbs with no joints, circular bodies, white four fingered gloves` **Yields to:** `anime.cuphead_look` — The whole vintage era must read, not only the limbs. `anime.rubber_hose` ### The Western Smear **Also called:** cartoon smear, multiple limb smear **What it is:** The same idea as the smear frame but pushed much further: the limb is drawn as a stretched ghost or as several transparent copies, or the whole body becomes a curved streak for a frame or two. **Effect on the audience:** Delivers comic speed. The exaggeration is part of the joke and the eye enjoys the distortion. **Used for and where it works best:** A sudden escape, a hammer swing, a shocked double take in a kids cartoon. Push it further than you would in anime, because the Western tradition tolerates far more distortion before the style breaks. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Kids Content, Commercial / TVC, Drama Series Episode, Meme / Comedy Edit, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Dark Comedy / Satire, Surreal / Absurdist, Fairy Tale, Adventure **Avoid when:** In a realistic style or in drawn drama, an exaggerated smear reads as a mistake. **Prompt:** `western cartoon style, extreme smear frame with the arm drawn as several transparent copies stretching across the frame` **Yields to:** `anime.multiples` — Anime or drawn drama: the restrained multiple-image version. `anime.western_smear` ### The UPA Flat Style **Also called:** UPA look, mid century flat animation **What it is:** The UPA studio style of the nineteen fifties: flat geometric shapes, backgrounds of one colour or a few lines, deliberately incorrect perspective, and very limited but carefully designed motion. **Effect on the audience:** Makes a cartoon feel like design rather than imitation. The elegance comes from reduction, and the image reads instantly at any size. **Used for and where it works best:** Explainers, commercials, educational content and title sequences. In explainer video it is the smartest choice because it is cheaper and clearer, and in titles it delivers instant mid century flavour. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Explainer, Commercial / TVC, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Corporate / Training, Kids Content, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Science / Educational, Family, Drama, Dark Comedy / Satire, Preschool / Early Learning, Surreal / Absurdist **Avoid when:** If the story needs deep empathy with a face, heavy flattening holds the viewer at arm's length. **Prompt:** `nineteen fifties UPA flat graphic animation style, geometric shapes, single colour backgrounds, deliberately flat perspective` **Yields to:** `anime.kyoani_micro_expression` — The story needs a face the viewer can feel. `anime.upa_flat` ### The Cuphead 1930s Look **Also called:** vintage cartoon look, thirties pastiche **What it is:** A full recreation of thirties cartoons: rubber hose limbs, watercolour painted backgrounds, film grain, gate weave, scratches, and a compressed soundtrack with a jazz band. **Effect on the audience:** Delivers nostalgia and strangeness together. Old beauty carrying modern content creates a pleasing, slightly unsettling contrast. **Used for and where it works best:** Games, commercials and music videos that want an instant distinctive identity. Work on the flaws, the scratches, the weave, the faded colour, with the same care as the drawing, because the flaws are what sell the illusion. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Commercial / TVC, Music Video, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Short Film, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Dark Comedy / Satire, Surreal / Absurdist, Fantasy / Epic, Horror, Musical, Adventure **Avoid when:** If the style overpowers the story it becomes a demo reel, and in content that needs instructional clarity the grain and scratches bury the detail. **Prompt:** `nineteen thirties cartoon pastiche, rubber hose characters, watercolour backgrounds, heavy film grain, gate weave and scratches` **Yields to:** `anime.upa_flat` — Instructional work: grain and scratches bury the detail. `anime.cuphead_look` ### Ben-Day Dots and Misregistration **Also called:** halftone print dots, colour offset, print artefacts **What it is:** Coloured printing dots are laid over the image with a slight offset between the colour channels, red and cyan pulled apart, like the misregistration of an old comic book press. **Effect on the audience:** Turns the image into a printed comic page. The feel is papery, nostalgic and slightly unstable, as if the world itself were printed. **Used for and where it works best:** Superhero worlds, memory or dream shots, transitions between dimensions. Increase the offset in moments of tension or danger so the image seems to vibrate, and return it to zero when the scene settles. **Best in:** formats: 3D CG Animation, 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Music Video, Title Sequence / Opening Credits, Trailer / Teaser, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Superhero, Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy, Adventure, Fantasy / Epic, Surreal / Absurdist **Avoid when:** Large dots over text or a small face destroy legibility, and in realistic work there is nothing to justify them. And the rising offset described above is a high-contrast pattern deliberately made to vibrate: at the point where it reads as an alternation rather than as a texture, how fast it may go and when it has to stop belong to `safety.photosensitive_flash`, not to this card. **Prompt:** `comic book print look, halftone Ben-Day dots over the image with slight red and cyan channel misregistration` **Yields to:** `anime.screen_tone` — Monochrome or manga register: grey halftone, no offset. `anime.benday_dots` ### The Klasky Csupo Distortion **Also called:** asymmetric character design, ugly cute style **What it is:** Deliberately asymmetric character design: two eyes at different sizes and heights, large noses, spindly limbs and nervous wobbling lines. It is the house style of Klasky Csupo. **Effect on the audience:** Makes characters feel real and strange at once. Lovable ugliness gives instant personality and keeps the image away from packaged prettiness. **Used for and where it works best:** Kids and family comedy that wants to stand apart from the polished look, and any work told from a child's point of view where the world should feel larger and odder. Design so each character is recognisable in silhouette, because the asymmetry makes silhouettes distinctive. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Kids Content, Drama Series Episode, Short Film, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Dark Comedy / Satire, Surreal / Absurdist, Slice of Life, Adventure **Avoid when:** If the work needs a classically appealing hero or serious romance, the distortion works against you. **Prompt:** `western cartoon style with deliberately asymmetric character design, mismatched eyes, big noses, nervous wobbly outlines` **Yields to:** `anime.cn_flat_vector` — A classically appealing hero, or serious romance. `anime.klasky_csupo_distortion` ### The Flat Vector Cartoon Look **Also called:** modern flat cartoon, vector shape style **What it is:** Characters built from simple vector shapes with an even weight outline or none at all, flat bright colour, and backgrounds in soft gradients. It became the dominant television cartoon look of the last decade. **Effect on the audience:** Keeps the image friendly, clear and easy to read on any screen, phones included. Simple shapes let emotion arrive faster. **Used for and where it works best:** Kids and family series, platform content and advertising. Give every character one signature colour and a unique silhouette so they read instantly, because this style loses distinction fast when shapes converge. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Kids Content, Drama Series Episode, Commercial / TVC, Explainer, Vertical Short-Form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok), AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Adventure, Fantasy / Epic, Slice of Life, Surreal / Absurdist **Avoid when:** If the work needs real horror or heavy drama, the vector smoothness softens everything. **Prompt:** `modern flat vector cartoon style, simple shapes, even weight outlines, bright flat colour, soft gradient background` **Yields to:** `anime.flat_cel_shading` — Real horror or heavy drama: vector softens it. `anime.cn_flat_vector` ### The Storybook Illustration Look **Also called:** picture book style, illustrated film look **What it is:** The film is built like the pages of a picture book: flat shapes in a limited palette, paper or cloth texture, brushed shadows, and centred painterly compositions. **Effect on the audience:** Delivers warmth and the feeling of a told tale. The viewer feels someone is reading to them and accepts fantasy and abstraction without question. **Used for and where it works best:** Fairy tales, kids content and heritage work retelling an old legend. In heritage documentary it is the cleanest way to show a scene with no archaeological evidence behind it, because it declares itself as illustration rather than reconstruction. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Kids Content, Heritage / Historical Documentary, Feature Film, Short Film, Explainer, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Fairy Tale, Family, Preschool / Early Learning, Mythology / Ancient Epic, Heritage (civilisation-focused), Fantasy / Epic, Historical / Biopic **Avoid when:** If the work needs tension or real danger, the papery softness cancels it. **Prompt:** `storybook illustration animation, flat shapes in a limited palette, paper texture, brushed shadows, centred painterly composition` **Yields to:** `doc.dramatised_reconstruction` — The evidence exists and the scene may be reconstructed. `anime.storybook_look` ### Squash on Landing **Also called:** landing squash, impact settle **What it is:** A fixed formula for any landing: stretch on the way down, a hard squash at the moment of contact, an expanding dust ring, then a small rebound and settle. **Effect on the audience:** Gives the character weight and retroactively establishes the height of the jump. The deeper the squash, the higher the audience believes the fall was. **Used for and where it works best:** Every landing in cartoon, anime and 3D: a jump, a flier touching down, a heavy character arriving. In kids content exaggerate the squash and the dust, and in mecha reduce the squash and raise the camera shake instead, because metal does not compress. **Best in:** formats: 2D Animation (Western / Cartoon), Anime (Japanese 2D), 3D CG Animation, Kids Content, Game Cinematic / Gameplay, Commercial / TVC, AI-Generated Clip | genres: Comedy, Family, Action, Shonen Battle (anime), Superhero, Preschool / Early Learning, Adventure **Avoid when:** Squashing a rigid or armoured body destroys credibility, and with no rebound after the squash the motion feels unfinished. **Prompt:** `cartoon landing, stretch on the descent, hard squash on contact with an expanding dust ring, small rebound and settle` **Yields to:** `move.impact_shake` — Metal does not compress; shake the camera instead. `anime.squash_on_landing`
