# Van Gogh BNB (Art Institute of Chicago · 2016)

## Insight
Van Gogh's bedroom paintings are among the most reproduced images in art history. Everyone knows what the room looks like. What would it feel like to actually sleep in it?

## Mechanic
The Art Institute of Chicago partnered with Airbnb to recreate Van Gogh's bedroom at 1:1 scale as a bookable accommodation. Guests could spend the night in the exact room depicted in the paintings, with the artworks visible in the museum during the day.

## Why it worked
The leap from passive viewing to overnight experience collapses the distance between audience and art in the most literal way possible. The Airbnb platform provides the booking infrastructure; the design precision (matching every element of the painting) is the craft. The activation generated global media at the cost of a room renovation.
