Humans flying in metal tubes at 35,000 feet is, objectively, extraordinary — but familiarity has made it routine. British Airways understood that the moment wonder could be restored, the brand would be differentiated in a category where everyone offers the same routes and similar prices. ## Mechanic An interactive digital billboard on Piccadilly Circus and Chiswick that, using live flight data, tracks real British Airways flights passing overhead. When a BA plane flies over the billboard, a child digital character runs out and points up at the actual plane in the actual sky above. The plane's flight number and origin city appear. Passersby stop and look up at the real plane. A real aircraft becomes part of a live advertisement. ## Why it worked P18 (tech as canvas): live flight tracking data is the technology; the experience it enables — pointing a child at a real plane overhead — is impossible without it. The technology does not decorate the idea; the technology is the idea. P09 (user as co-author): passersby become participants when they look up. The billboard directs their attention to the sky, not to the screen. Won three Cannes Grand Prix. Set a new standard for ambient outdoor technology in advertising. ## Steal Find the real-world data stream that, if made visible at the right moment and place, creates wonder. The aircraft data existed before the campaign — British Airways did not create it. The creative act was connecting it to a moment of public attention in real time. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p09]] - Sibling: [[red-bull-stratos-2012.md|Stratos]] - Sibling: [[snickers-hungerithm-2016.md|Hungerithm]] - Emotion match: [[guinness-surfer-1999.md|Surfer]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
