# Subservient Chicken (Burger King · 2004)

## Insight
Burger King's brand promise was "Have It Your Way" — customization, personal choice. But no fast food brand had ever actually given consumers genuine control over brand content. The promise existed as a tagline; it had never been literalized.

## Mechanic
A man in a chicken suit stood in a living room, accessible via a dedicated website. Users typed commands — any commands — and the chicken performed them. Over 400 behaviors were pre-filmed and served based on keyword triggers. The site launched with zero advertising; it spread via email and word of mouth. In the first 24 hours, 1 million people visited. Within a week, the site had logged 14 million sessions.

## Why it worked
It was 2004 — interactive brand experiences online were unheard of at this scale. But the mechanic was not the novelty: the mechanic literalized the brand promise in a way no 30-second spot could. "Have It Your Way" stopped being a claim and became an experience. Users who discovered the chicken didn't just see a Burger King ad — they had a Burger King moment. The viral spread was entirely word-of-mouth because the experience was genuinely amusing and genuinely novel. CP+B built a world-first digital interactive character 13 years before chatbots became standard.

## Steal
When your brand promise contains a verb ("have it your way," "just do it," "think different"), ask: what does this promise look like as an actual mechanic? Not a metaphor in a film — an actual system users can operate. The gap between "claimed" and "experienced" is where brand loyalty is built.
