Not as a delusion but as a pure aspiration — the complete absorption into what it would feel like to move that way, to make those decisions, to exist at that level of mastery. Gatorade's insight was that this aspiration is not embarrassing — it is the foundational feeling of sport itself. ## Mechanic A TV campaign built around the jingle "Be Like Mike" — montages of Jordan playing basketball intercut with children, adults, and celebrities imitating his moves in ordinary settings. The jingle became immediately iconic, and the phrase "Be Like Mike" entered common usage as a shorthand for aspirational excellence. The campaign ran in various forms for years and is one of the most recognized sports advertising campaigns in US history. ## Why it worked P13 (truth telling): stating plainly that people want to be like Jordan was audacious — most brands would hedge or soften it. Gatorade said it directly and made it the campaign's organizing principle. P16 (long-form drama) used the jingle as an emotional anchor that made each subsequent execution feel like part of a continuing experience. The campaign transformed a functional sports drink into a symbol of the aspiration to excellence. ## Steal Name what the audience already wants without making them feel foolish for wanting it. The aspiration your audience has toward your product's hero or territory — if stated plainly — is more powerful than any product claim, because the audience already believes it. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p16]] - Sibling: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] - Emotion match: [[always-like-a-girl-2014.md|Like a Girl]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
