# A Boy and His Atom (IBM · 2013)

## Insight
IBM's researchers work at the atomic scale — a realm invisible to human perception. Making that scale tangible requires a medium that operates at that scale. The technology is the canvas that no other brand could use.

## Mechanic
IBM scientists used a scanning tunneling microscope to move individual atoms, frame by frame, to create the world's smallest stop-motion film — a boy playing with a single carbon monoxide atom. Certified by Guinness World Records as the smallest film ever made.

## Why it worked
The technology (atomic manipulation) is the craft and the message simultaneously. P08 (Craft as Message): the execution at the atomic scale demonstrates IBM's research capability better than any claim. P18 (Tech as Canvas): the STM is not just used by IBM — it IS IBM's work, made visible for the first time.

## Steal
When your organisation works at a scale that most people cannot perceive, find a way to make that scale visible without simplifying it. The awe of the actual is more effective than any metaphor.
