# Badge of Honor (Nike China · 2017)

## Insight
In China, sports injuries carry social stigma — showing physical vulnerability is culturally uncomfortable. Young Chinese athletes hide their injuries rather than wearing them as evidence of effort. Nike's insight: if you've earned the wound, it should be visible.

## Mechanic
Nike China created branded sports bandages — designed to be visible, colourful, and clearly Nike — that turned sports injuries into visible badges of athletic commitment. Participants shared their bandaged injuries on social media as proof of effort.

## Why it worked
P17 (design as idea): the product itself — a bandage — becomes the communication. The design makes the wound visible and desirable rather than hidden. P09 (user as co-author): the campaign scales through participants sharing their injuries, not through Nike paying for media. The insight is culturally specific to China (injury stigma) but the mechanic is universally legible.

## Steal
When your audience has a behaviour they hide because it's culturally uncomfortable, design something that makes hiding it more uncomfortable than showing it. The badge inverts the shame into pride through product design alone.
