# The Last Game (Nike · 2014)

## Insight
The World Cup triggers a global debate about risk vs. safety in football: scientific, data-optimized play versus the instinct-driven, unpredictable genius of natural footballers. Nike's brand stands with the latter — the improviser, not the algorithm.

## Mechanic
A six-minute animated film, released ahead of the 2014 World Cup, featuring a cast of Nike footballer characters (Ronaldo, Ribery, Rooney, Neymar animated likenesses) facing a future where cloned, risk-free athletes have replaced the originals. The natural players must come out of retirement for one last game to prove that risk is worth it.

## Why it worked
Animation freed the brand from the limits of real-world production while retaining the personalities of actual world stars. The film functions as a manifesto: Nike explicitly sides with flair over safety, instinct over optimization. Six minutes earned because the world was already paying attention to football.

## Steal
For global sporting events, build a narrative that takes a clear position in the debate audiences are already having. Not "we support the event" — but "we have an opinion about what this event means." Position the brand inside the conversation, not around it.
