Their absence is abstract — until made concrete. ## Mechanic ChangeTheRef (founded by Parkland parents) hired actors to pose as gun rights advocates and invited two prominent NRA board members to give a commencement address — to 3,044 empty chairs representing students killed by gun violence. The board members didn't know who they were actually speaking to. The speeches were filmed and released. ## Why it worked The social experiment exposes the gap between rhetoric and reality in real time. The board members' discomfort when confronted with the specific human cost of their positions is the evidence. The empty chairs make the abstraction physical. No CGI, no actors playing victims — just presence through absence. ## Steal When your cause is dismissed as abstract, find the single visual that makes the numbers physically undeniable. Then construct an experience where your opponent must face that visual while doing something they'd normally do comfortably. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p13]] - Sibling: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] - Sibling: [[calm-the-last-photo-2022.md|The Last Photo]] - Emotion match: [[always-like-a-girl-2014.md|Like a Girl]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
