# Freak Chain (GE · 2016)

## Insight
GE's innovations in industrial technology — turbines, medical equipment, aviation — are technically extraordinary but invisible to consumer audiences. Making the invisible exciting requires a different register than earnest demonstration.

## Mechanic
A film in the absurdist tradition of GE's broader campaign series at the time — likely featuring surreal product-related chains of cause and effect, or anthropomorphised technology in unexpected situations. Part of GE's work with BBDO exploring ways to make industrial innovation culturally resonant.

## Why it worked
Absurdism (P11) was GE's consistent strategy in this period for making B2B-grade technology accessible to a general audience: instead of explaining what the technology does, make the audience feel the spirit of ingenuity through bizarre, surprising content.

## Steal
When technology is too complex to explain accessibly, use absurdism to communicate the emotional quality of the innovation — curiosity, ingenuity, surprise — rather than its specifications.
