# Photobooth (Hamlet Cigars · 1985)

## Insight

Hamlet Cigars' platform — "Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet," paired with Bach's Air on G String — was built around the idea that a cigar is a small consolation for life's minor disasters. The photobooth execution is the perfect vehicle: a small, private moment of vanity thwarted by technology, consoled by a Hamlet.

## Mechanic

A TV film: a man in a photobooth attempting to take a passport photo. Everything goes wrong — hat falls, expression is terrible, photo strips out at the worst possible moment. He lights a Hamlet. Bach's Air on G String plays. The man exhales with complete equanimity. The comedy is in the gap between expectation and reality; the brand is the resolution.

## Why it worked

P11 (absurd as carrier): the escalating photobooth disasters are constructed for maximum comic payoff — each attempt worse than the last. P16 (long-form drama) uses the build of the photobooth sequence to make the resolution (cigar, music, contentment) feel genuinely earned. The platform's genius was that it never needed to claim anything about the product — the cigar was simply the object present at the moment when small catastrophes resolved into acceptance.

## Steal

Find the moment of small daily defeat that your audience instantly recognizes. The more precisely mundane the scenario, the more universal the recognition. The product's job is not to solve the problem — just to be there when the person decides to accept it.
