# The Beginner (John Lewis · 2022)

## Insight
People learn new skills as acts of love — the effort of preparing for someone else's arrival is as profound a gift as anything wrapped.

## Mechanic
A film showing a middle-aged man learning to skateboard, failing repeatedly and comically. The reveal: he is learning to connect with a foster child who is about to join his family for Christmas. Partnership with Action for Children on foster care awareness.

## Why it worked
The twist recontextualises every preceding moment of effort: what looked like a midlife hobby becomes an act of radical love and preparation. The foster care context raised awareness of a social issue while giving the brand a genuine purpose anchor.

## Steal
Build a film around sustained, comic effort and withhold the purpose until the final reveal. The audience's investment in the activity is transferred instantly to the relationship that motivates it.
