# Prescribed to Death (NSC · 2018)

## Insight
22,000 Americans die annually from prescription opioid overdoses. That number is cited in every article about the crisis and remembered by no one — statistics are the format in which horror becomes deniable.

## Mechanic
A wall installation in Chicago's Millennium Park: 22,000 prescription pills, each engraved with the face of a real person who died from opioid overdose. A machine drilled a new pill into the wall every 24 minutes — the rate of new deaths. Visitors could look up individual names. The installation grew in real time as they watched.

## Why it worked
Truth-telling (P13): each pill was a specific face — the abstraction of "22,000" became 22,000 individual legible losses. Design as idea (P17): the wall itself was the message — no copy was needed. The real-time drilling machine made time itself a component of the installation, converting a passive statistic into active accumulation.

## Steal
Give abstract statistics a physical equivalent that grows or changes in real time. Passive statistics are processed and forgotten; active physical objects accumulating in front of an audience create witnesses rather than readers.
