Two young boys watching her walk to a vending machine are not watching a model — they are watching the most desirable person they could imagine. But then she drinks the Pepsi. The boys' expressions make clear: they are admiring the can, not the woman. The joke inverts the expected sexual economy of celebrity advertising. ## Mechanic A Super Bowl TV spot: two young boys sitting on a fence outside a country store watch Cindy Crawford arrive in a car, walk to a Pepsi machine, and drink a Pepsi in slow motion. Slow motion, iconic entrance, typically aspirational direction. Then the reveal: cut to the boys' faces, one saying "Is that a great car or what?" The other: admiring the can. The spot subverted celebrity endorsement by making the joke at its own expense. ## Why it worked P16 (long-form drama) used the full build of classic celebrity entrance — slow motion, music, admiring gaze — to set up the inversion. The spot was self-aware about its own mechanisms: it knew the audience expected a certain kind of male gaze and subverted it for comedy. The irony communicated brand confidence — Pepsi was secure enough to make fun of its own marketing conventions. The execution became a touchstone for Super Bowl advertising craft. ## Steal If you're going to use the conventions of aspirational celebrity advertising, go all the way in — then subvert them in the final beat. The subversion requires the full investment in the convention to earn its payoff. Half-measures make it merely confusing. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p16]] - Sibling: [[apple-1984-1984.md|1984]] - Sibling: [[apple-think-different-1997.md|Think Different]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
