# Escape the Sofa (Reebok · 2004)

## Insight
Most people who buy athletic footwear are not athletes — they are people who aspire to move more but routinely choose comfort over activity. "Escape the Sofa" acknowledged the real enemy: not competitors but the gravitational pull of inertia and comfort.

## Mechanic
A film using absurdist humor (P11) to animate the sofa as an antagonist — a sentient force of comfort that fights back against people who try to leave it and exercise. Long-form storytelling (P16) gives the conflict time to develop.

## Why it worked
Naming the real enemy (P02 element within P11): not "buy our shoes" but "your sofa is conspiring against you." The absurdism makes the enemy playful rather than shameful, which lowers the psychological barrier to action. Reebok positioned itself as the solution to a universal problem, not a premium product for serious athletes.

## Steal
In a category where the real barrier is psychological inertia, make inertia the villain — and give it a character. The audience laughs at the villain because they recognize it, and in laughing, they create distance from it.
