# Refugee Nation (2016)

## Insight
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, 65 million displaced people had no flag to carry, no anthem to stand for, no nation to represent. The symbolic exclusion from a ceremony built on national identity made their statelessness visible in the most globally-watched event on earth.

## Mechanic
A flag was designed for the Refugee Olympic Team — its pattern derived from the orange of life jackets worn by people crossing the Mediterranean. An anthem was composed by a Syrian composer using music he made as a refugee. Both were submitted for official use at the Games.

## Why it worked
The design decisions (flag, anthem) are the activism. The orange is not a metaphor; it is the literal material of survival. P17 (Design as Idea) and P04 (Brand as Activist) combine: the design IS the statement, and creating it publicly is the action. No slogan required.

## Steal
When your cause involves a group that has been symbolically excluded, find the symbol they're excluded from (flag, anthem, name) and design the version they deserve. Make the design the campaign.
