# Little Lad (Starburst · 2007)

## Insight
Starburst's berry flavors needed a campaign moment that translated the intensity of fruit flavor into visual absurdism. The "berries and cream" spot found an unlikely ambassador: a Victorian-era little lad who goes into raptures over cream-flavored candy.

## Mechanic
A bizarre, committed performance by a little person dressed as a 19th century schoolboy, dancing and singing "berries and cream" with escalating enthusiasm. The spot committed fully to its absurd premise without winking. No explanation. No product shot held beyond what's necessary.

## Why it worked
The commitment was total — the actor was genuinely in the bit, not commenting on it. Skittles-adjacent absurdism applied to a non-Skittles brand: the specific historical/class incongruity of "berries and cream" as an aristocratic enthusiasm made it culturally quotable. The spot became a meme reference years after airing, resurfacing on TikTok.

## Steal
Commit completely to the absurd character, setting, or premise. Half-committed absurdism reads as awkward; fully committed absurdism reads as confident. The audience laughs with the ad, not at it.
