The only differentiator available is comedy. If rubber cement keeps things stuck together, the most absurd possible demonstration of that principle is a situation where things emphatically should not be stuck together. ## Mechanic A TV commercial featuring nuns accidentally glued together or to objects by Talens rubber cement, in a comedic vignette. Part of the Dutch tradition of absurdist advertising that predated its widespread adoption in the UK and US. The religious setting heightens the incongruity and gives the comedy an irreverent edge. ## Why it worked P11 (absurd as carrier): the combination of nuns, glue, and slapstick creates pure incongruity comedy. For a product with no meaningful point of differentiation, absurdism is the most defensible creative choice — it creates recall without requiring a credible claim. The irreverence was appropriate to a culture that had a tradition of comic advertising in otherwise dull categories. ## Steal For commodity categories with no meaningful differentiation, absurdism is not a shortcut — it is the strategy. The joke is the memory. If nothing about your product is differentiated, make the advertising itself differentiated. ## Related - Pattern: [[../MOC-pattern.md#p11]] - Sibling: [[metro-trains-dumb-ways-to-die-2012.md|Dumb Ways to Die]] - Sibling: [[old-spice-man-your-man-could-smell-like-2010.md|The Man Your Man Could Smell Like]] - Emotion match: [[absolut-absolut-campaign-1981.md|Absolut _____]] --- *Author: Serge Shima ([t.me/aimastersme](https://t.me/aimastersme) · [sergeshima.com](https://sergeshima.com) · [aimasters.me](https://aimasters.me)) · License: CC BY 4.0 — attribution required · Source: [smixs/creative-director-skill](https://github.com/smixs/creative-director-skill)*
