# Symptoms The reverse index from a defect to the cards that repair it. No equivalent file exists in the Visual Creativity Database, which routes by format and genre. This one routes by **complaint**, because that is the form most writing requests actually arrive in. Nobody asks for a technique by name. They say *the scene is flat*, *the dialogue is on the nose*, *the episode doesn't hold*, *I don't care about him*. **How to use it:** find the complaint, read the diagnosis, then open only the cards it names. The first card in each route is the one to try first. Every route here points at a card that exists in this database. Routes are added as categories are built. --- ## Find the complaint, then open one file Every complaint family is its own file. Match the sentence below, open that one file, and read the cards it names. Do not read the families you did not match: this router exists so that finding a card costs less than reading it, which is not true of a single large index. ### Scene-level complaints — [`symptoms-scene-level.md`](../phase-02-screenplay-dialogue/symptoms-scene-level.md) - The mechanics of change reach the page through "He changes and I can't point at the scene where it happened" and "I don't know whether my character has an arc at all", which hold the three working procedures — `arc.arc_statement`, `arc.arc_audit` and, from "The ending feels unearned", `arc.write_backwards` — and each says in the route that it is a procedure rather than a repair. The four arc shapes outside the five are separated inside one complaint, "He doesn't change and I don't know whether that's a problem", because they arrive looking identical and are not. The five named failures are routed as diagnoses, each paired with the card that repairs it: `arc.told_revelation` with `arc.self_revelation` and `arc.proof_scene`, `arc.plot_solved_arc` with `arc.the_choice`, `arc.unattacked_lie` with `char.tailored_opponent` and `arc.first_challenge`, `arc.midpoint_peak` with `struct.stc_midpoint`, and `arc.padding_relapse` with `char.relapse_beat`. Part 2 of every built category is routed in full: everything in `cat-anta-2.md`, `cat-beat-2.md`, `cat-emo-2.md`, `cat-expo-2.md`, `cat-lyric-2.md`, `cat-pov-2.md`, `cat-rel-2.md`, `cat-seq-2.md`, `cat-sub-2.md`, `cat-theme-2.md` and `cat-time-2.md` is reachable from at least one complaint here, most of it from a complaint written for it. So is Part 3 — `cat-emo-3.md`, `cat-expo-3.md`, `cat-info-3.md`, `cat-lyric-3.md`, `cat-rhythm-3.md` and `cat-tens-3.md` — together with `arcs-2.md`. Those eight files exist because the database reported gaps in itself: each of their cards was reached for by a kit or a router and could not be cited. A good half of them are job problems rather than draft problems, which is why **Commissioned and applied-work complaints** was added as a section. A writer whose song will not clear, whose dub has to fit a mouth, whose legal line has killed the opening or whose instructions nobody reads does not look under "scene" or "structure", and before that section there was nowhere on this page for them to land. The rest were placed in the sections that already held their kind: the reassurance, permission, commemorative and procedural-reset complaints in Emotion, the four "whose arc is it" shapes and the two that do not complete in Character, the three clocks that are not a countdown in Tension, the album as a structure in Song, and the puzzle, the trailhead, the progression track and the player's own arc in Interactive. The named failures in that batch are routed as diagnoses, each paired with the card that repairs it: `emo.false_reassurance` with `emo.adult_reassurance`, `emo.we_that_excludes` with `emo.commemorative_register`, `emo.manufactured_inadequacy` with `anta.problem_as_enemy`, `tens.announced_deadline_dropped` with `tens.countdown`, `tens.warning_fatigue` with `tens.warning_notice`, `rhythm.lip_lock` with `rhythm.lip_sync_adaptation`, `lyric.temp_love` with `lyric.spotting_session`, `info.bolted_on_disclaimer` with `info.disclosure_as_content`, `expo.unread_instruction` with `expo.prerequisite_block` and `expo.numbered_step_list`, `inter.agency_of_passage` inside the choices complaint it belongs to, and `arc.imposed_arc` with `arc.real_person_arc`. The procedures in it say in the route that they are procedures: `rhythm.cutdown_ladder`, `info.deducibility_audit`, `arc.arc_under_many_hands` and `inter.platform_contract`. The tension batch is held in ten complaints, seven of them new. Hiding, the sound that must not be made and hiding in the open sit together after "The middle of the sequence goes slack"; the reveal clock and `tens.threat_shown_too_early` extend the monster complaint in the Antagonist section, where that note actually arrives; `tens.inferred_threat` extends "I need the threat felt without showing it" with the distinction that matters, which is that it is a whole-work commitment and not one event kept off-frame; and the four remaining-media cards — `tens.page_turn`, `tens.room_tone_silence`, `tens.the_interval` and `tens.reader_owns_the_clock` — extend "Tension in a medium that isn't film", with the prose one also given its own complaint because a novelist arrives at it in those words. The eleven named failures in this wave are routed as diagnoses, each paired with the card that repairs it: `char.pity_lever` and `char.costless_condition` both with `char.condition_as_constraint` (the first also with `char.disability_expertise`), `char.prize_love_interest` with `char.supporting_character_want` and `char.only_reacts`, `char.evil_twin` with `char.the_double` and `char.tailored_opponent`, `char.decorative_exotic_name` with `char.name_as_design`, `char.character_dossier` with the three development procedures that survive its own audit, `tens.threat_shown_too_early` with `tens.reveal_clock`, `tens.total_surveillance` with `tens.threat_with_rules` and `tens.being_watched`, `tens.diluted_stakes` with `tens.picturable_consequence` and `tens.ensemble_jeopardy`, `tens.unearned_reprieve` with the two-question test and a rescue charged to somebody in the room, and `tens.exhausting_draft` with the hope audit. The procedures say in the route that they are procedures: `char.idiolect_sheet`, `char.character_interview`, `char.want_need_sheet`, `char.wound_questionnaire`, `char.audition_scene`, `char.bible_entry`, `char.behavioural_continuity`, and the trough and hope audits inside "Every scene is at ten and the reader gave up". Three pairs that sound alike are kept apart and say so: that last one against "It's relentless and the audience goes numb", `tens.ritual_that_must_continue` against `scene.interrupted_ritual` and `seq.ritual_sequence`, and `tens.post_climax_hold` against "The ending goes on too long", which is the same twenty minutes read as a cutting problem. `cat-scene-3.md` and `cat-char-4.md` are routed in full, in twenty new complaints and two extended ones, and they close the page: with this wave every card in the database is reachable except the three groups listed above. Both files were written because the database reported the gaps against itself while being used, and both sit closest to documentary, testimony and heritage work — which is why the routes are spread across five sections rather than gathered into one. The scenes that are *shapes* went to **Scene shape complaints**, in a run of six that all have a real person in the room: the interview that stops or retracts or turns the question back, the contributor performing their own life, the scene assembled from a transcript, the false adjacency, the negotiation with no leverage, and the handover of a duty. The ones that are *job problems* went to **Commissioned and applied-work complaints**, whose preamble already describes them exactly — going back for consent, the subject with a contractual veto, and the right of reply — because a maker meeting those is not looking under "scene". The remaining four went where the complaint actually arrives: the aimed speech into **Subtext**, next to the triangle it is constantly confused with; the confirmation scene into **Emotion**, directly under `emo.bad_news_delivery`, which it inverts; the apology that lands into **Relationship and ensemble**, under the rupture complaints and above `rel.instant_reconciliation`, its failing twin; and the writer inside their own reportage into **Point of view**, because a writer asking how much of themselves to put in is asking a viewpoint question. The character batch went to **Character** throughout, extending "I'm writing about real people" with the single living unmergeable subject and its named failure rather than opening a second complaint about the same page, and adding the non-actor pair beside "I can hear the writer casting the part", the class pair beside "The character's job is just a label", the community-veto and second-language cards beside "Writing across a culture I am not from", and the returning minor character beside "The cast is too big". One thing in this batch is unusual enough to be flagged in the route itself rather than left in the card: `char.written_for_a_non_actor` and `char.speaks_for_others` are **prohibition** cards, whose useful content is what may not be written, and both routes say so in the first line, because a writer needs to know that before opening them. The five named failures in this wave are routed as diagnoses, each paired with the card that repairs it: `scene.reconstruction_unmarked` with `expo.disclosed_staging_note`, inside the complaint about reconstruction admitted only in the credits; `scene.false_adjacency` with `scene.transcript_built`, and the two cross-reference as the image-side and cut-side versions of one offence; `char.coached_authenticity` with `scene.transcript_built` again, which is its one honest neighbour; `char.wealth_as_objects` with `char.inherited_ease` and the omitted calculation; and `char.softened_for_the_reader` with `char.living_subject_reader`, inside "I'm writing about real people". Three pairs that sound alike are kept apart and each says which one the reader is in: "He already knows what I've come to tell him" against "I have to say the unbearable thing and stay in the room"; "The toast is going well and one person in the room is meant to hear something else" against the triangle complaint above it and against `scene.public_scene`; and "The actor isn't an actor" against "I can hear the writer casting the part", which is the same casting question from the opposite end. The last eight files — `cat-end-3.md`, `cat-expo-4.md`, `cat-info-4.md`, `cat-lyric-4.md`, `cat-open-3.md`, `cat-struct-2.md` and `cat-tens-5.md` — are routed in sixteen new complaints and three extended ones, and they are what closes the page. They divide cleanly into three registers and the routes were placed by register rather than by category. The **prose and the page** cards went where a novelist or a poet is already looking: the chapter ending and the two whole-form questions into **Structural**, next to the endings and the systems; re-entry after a gap and the page's framing furniture into **Exposition and world**, the first beside the serial re-entry cards it is constantly mistaken for and the second directly under `expo.framing_text_furniture`, which is its screen twin; and the prose poem into **Song and lyric**, at the end of the run that already holds the album. `struct.flash_fiction` carries a warning in its first line rather than in its card, because the obvious search — "short form" — lands a prose writer on `time.shortform_compression`, `char.ten_second_person`, `arc.sub_minute`, `beat.shortform_beat`, `sub.short_form`, `expo.short_form_frontload` and `tens.micro_form_tension`, every one of which is written for vertical video and none of which applies to a reader who controls the pace. The **non-fiction and commissioned** cards went to **Commissioned and applied-work**, whose preamble already describes them — a check the insurer will ask for, a name that cannot be printed, a deposit copy that has to be in the contract in year one — except the nut graf, which is an opening and went to **Opening**. `info.fact_check_pass` is routed as a procedure, and its fourth step is given in full in the route rather than left in the card, because walking a familiar claim back down through popular repetition to a primary source is the step that separates a real check from a naive one, and a claim repeated in ten videos is one unchecked claim with nine echoes. The **tension** cards went to **Tension**, each placed against the complaint it is most likely to be confused with. Three of that batch needed the boundary written into the route itself. `tens.subtitle_preempt` opens by saying which of the four subtitle cards the reader is in — this one for a reveal, punchline or turn spent early by the cue, `rhythm.subtitle_beat` for legibility, `dial.subtitle_constraint` for line construction and `open.subtitled_open` for the first minute — because a cue can pass all three of the others and fail this one completely, and the central case, an English voiceover with burned Arabic subtitles written by the same hand, is the one where the writer owns both channels and can actually fix it. `tens.kids_bounded_threat` contradicts `tens.trough_placement` and `tens.release_valve` on purpose, and the route says so in its first line, because the adult rule is that the release is shorter than the tension and is cut early, while a children's recovery beat runs to completion — a writer who follows the general cards will cut the exact beat that lets the child sleep. And `struct.unity_of_effect` was placed directly under "It doesn't add up to anything" so the separation from `theme.controlling_idea` is visible at the point of confusion: a controlling idea is what the work argues and is auditable scene by scene, an effect is what the work does to the reader and lives in the reading rather than in the story, and a piece can prove the first perfectly and leave the reader holding nothing. A note on how the newest routes are worded, so later additions match. A named failure is routed as a **diagnosis**, inline and in prose — *that is `seq.premature_climax`* — and the technique that repairs it is given as the numbered step after it. A technique is routed as an **instruction**: what to do, then the card. Where two complaints sound alike, they are kept apart and each says which one the reader is actually in. *Build notes from when this file was drafted — targets, running totals and what remained to be written — are kept verbatim in the [coverage history](../tools/history/coverage-history.md). They were true of the draft, not of the file, so they no longer sit here as if they were measurements.*
