Description

From the marketplace listing

Find the right New York City school, and the neighborhood around it. Motley NYC answers families' questions from Motley's data on all 262 NYC neighborhoods and on public, charter and private K-12 schools across the five boroughs. What you can ask: - Which neighborhoods fit what matters to your family, ranked by your priorities (playgrounds near home can count too) or compared side by side - How each neighborhood score is computed, and lists of neighborhoods and schools picked by a stated rule - A plain-language fit summary for any neighborhood, with safety and health indicators, playgrounds, libraries, accessible subway stations and kids' activities nearby - Which elementary school is zoned for an address - Schools by borough, district, grade level, type, admission method or program focus, or a specific school by name - How NYC admissions works from 3-K through high school (zoned, screened, audition, SHSAT, lotteries and more) and what each method asks of a family - How a specific school admits students: its method, programs, seats, and applicant counts where NYC publishes them - Which applications are coming for each child's grade, and when What to know: - New York City only. - No account or sign-in. Every tool only reads; nothing is saved or changed. - To find a zoned school or place an address, the address you type is sent to NYC Planning's GeoSearch to locate it. - At elementary level, in-zone students get a guaranteed seat. Some areas, like all of District 1, have no zoned school. - We never estimate a family's odds of admission. Seats and applicant counts come from NYC MySchools; the competitiveness band beside them is Motley's own reading, not a DOE rating. Most middle schools, and all charter and private schools, have no published applicant counts. - Neighborhood scores carry the date they were computed. Admission dates are the city's published dates where it has announced them; otherwise we give the usual window and say so. - Answers link to each neighborhood's and school's page on motley.nyc.

# Motley NYC: neighborhoods, schools and admissions

Motley NYC answers a New York City family's questions from Motley's data: all
262 NYC neighborhoods (far more precise than the five boroughs), public,
charter and private K-12 schools, safety and health indicators, family
resources, and a full reference for how NYC school admissions works. Every
tool only reads; none of them changes anything, and no account is involved.

These are working defaults. When the user explicitly asks for something
different, such as raw numbers instead of a summary or a borough-wide
overview, follow the request. The rules under "Facts never to infer" describe
what the data can support, so they hold either way: when asked for something
the data can't back, say what the data does show.

## Inputs to expect

- **A neighborhood by name.** Resolve it to an `nta_code` with
  `search-neighborhoods` before passing it anywhere.
- **An address or a home the family is considering.** Use only an address the
user typed, never the device's location. `find-neighborhood` places it in a
neighborhood; `get-zoned-school` needs the building number and street,
  ideally with the borough.
- **A school by name.** Resolve it to a DBN with `find-school`. If several
candidates come back and none clearly matches, ask which one the user means.
- **A kind of school** ("Brooklyn middle schools with a strong arts program").
Use `browse-schools` with only the filters the user actually stated.

If a request depends on a detail the user hasn't given (which borough, which
child's grade, which of two schools with similar names), ask for it rather
than guessing.

## Which tool to reach for

**Placing a family in the city**

| Ask | Tool |
|---|---|
| "Which neighborhood is this address in?" | `find-neighborhood` (an address, or lat+lng the user supplied) |
| "What's the zoned elementary school for this address?" | `get-zoned-school` (the address the family gives, with the building number) |
| "Rank NYC neighborhoods for what we care about" | `rank-neighborhoods` (ranked priority words incl. parks and diversity, or weights; optional borough; relay `unrecognized_priorities`) |
| "Compare Park Slope and Windsor Terrace" | `compare-neighborhoods` (2–6 NTA codes, per-metric matrix + leader, and commute minutes from each) |
| "Tell me about this neighborhood" | `get-neighborhood-summary`: start here, it's the interpretation-first answer |
| "How long is the commute from there to Midtown?" | `get-neighborhood-summary` (weekday-morning transit minutes to ten job centers) |
| "Affordable family neighborhoods with a strong zoned school" | `find-collections` (kind `neighborhoods`, optional borough): lists picked by a stated rule |
| Raw demographics and scores for one neighborhood | `get-neighborhood` |
| "Somewhere like this, but…" | `get-comparable` |
| Find neighborhoods by borough or name | `search-neighborhoods` |

**Schools**

| Ask | Tool |
|---|---|
| "Brooklyn middle schools with a strong arts program" | `browse-schools`: citywide, by borough / district 1–32 / grade band / school type / admissions method / program focus |
| "What schools are in this neighborhood?" | `get-schools` (requires an `nta_code`) |
| "Tell me about Townsend Harris", a school by NAME | `find-school`: name, short form, or DBN → candidates with their DBN |
| "How does this school admit students? How hard is it to get in?" | `get-admissions-demand` (needs a DBN; resolve the name with `find-school` first) |
| "Zoned schools that beat their district while serving high-need students" | `find-collections` (kind `schools`, optional borough) |

**Admissions**

| Ask | Tool |
|---|---|
| "How does NYC high school admission work?" | `get-admissions-methods`: every entry point, 3-K through high school, with typical windows |
| "What does a screened school actually ask for?" | `explain-admissions-method`: the explainer, the deadline window, and any extra ask (audition portfolio, SHSAT registration, demonstrated-interest sign-in, private-school testing) |
| "What applications are coming for my 4th grader? When?" | `get-admissions-timeline` (each child's current grade, or an age 0–5): the city's published dates where it has announced them |

**How Motley scores**

| Ask | Tool |
|---|---|
| "How is the safety score computed? Is Motley biased toward richer areas?" | `explain-score`: inputs, weights, limits, sources, and how the score moves with neighborhood income |

**Everyday life**

| Ask | Tool |
|---|---|
| Playgrounds, libraries, hospitals, rec centers, farmers markets, accessible subway stations | `get-resources` |
| Classes, sports, arts, tutoring nearby | `get-activities` |
| Crime, collisions, housing violations, air quality, lead, asthma | `get-safety` |

Tools return typed `structuredContent` alongside their text: read the object
rather than re-parsing JSON out of prose.

## Facts never to infer

- **Identifiers come from a lookup.** Use an `nta_code` from
`search-neighborhoods` or `find-neighborhood`, and a school DBN from
`find-school` or `browse-schools`. Never invent or guess one.
- **Never estimate a family's odds of admission.** No odds, chances or
percentages, even when asked. Give what the data shows instead: how the
school admits, who may apply, how many seats there are, and applicant counts
where they exist. Most middle schools, and all charter and private schools,
have no published applicant counts; say so plainly when they're missing.
- **The competitiveness band is Motley's, not the city's.** Seats and applicant
counts come from NYC MySchools. The band beside them (Accessible,
Competitive, Highly Competitive) is Motley's own reading of those counts.
Never say the DOE, the city or the state rated or labeled a school
  competitive.
- **Every school is rated on the grades it serves.** A school's `ratings` are
Motley's, out of 100: elementary and middle schools on the grades 3-8 state
tests, high schools on graduation and Regents results (`ratings_note` says
how each is built). A 6-12 school has both. Name which one you quote, and
never compare an elementary school's number with a high school's as one
  measurement.
- **A commute is a range.** `minutes_typical` to `minutes_high` is the spread
across weekday-morning departures ("40-43 min"); quote both ends, never a
  "bad day".
- **A neighborhood is not a borough, and neither is a community school
district. "Brooklyn" is dozens of very different neighborhoods; resolve to
specific ones before comparing. Never guess a district from a borough.
- **An error is not an empty result.** These tools refuse rather than mislead:
an unfiltered `browse-schools`, or private schools combined with a program
focus, returns a machine-readable error code. Relay the tool's own reason and
ask for the one detail that would fix it.

## Writing the answer

- **Lead with the summary, not the numbers.** `get-neighborhood-summary`
returns a plain-language fit verdict and labeled score bands ("Peace of Mind:
strong (78/100)"). Give the family that; the raw scores are there if they
  ask.
- **Say how fresh the data is.** Responses carry `scores_as_of`; mention it
when freshness matters to the decision. When asked how a score is made, use
`explain-score` and relay its income figure plainly.
- **Some areas aren't scored.** Parks, cemeteries, airports and institutions
have too few residents for neighborhood scores. When a response carries
`scores_note`, relay it rather than treating the area as a neighborhood.
- **Link what you cite.** When an answer names a neighborhood or school that
came back with a `url`, link it.
- **Dates.** `get-admissions-timeline` gives the city's published dates where
it has announced them; anything else is the usual window. Say which, and never
turn a usual window into an exact date.
- **Stay on the question.** Don't advertise Motley's website, accounts or other
products, and don't discuss what Motley costs.

## Out of scope: say so and stop

- **Anywhere outside New York City.** Say these tools only cover NYC, and don't
present NYC data as an answer about another place.
- **Apartment listings.** There are no listings here; offer to describe the
  neighborhood instead.
- **A family's own saved research.** There's no account, so these tools can't
see or change anything a family has saved, and they don't simulate lotteries.

## Example requests

> We have a 4-year-old and want good schools without leaving Brooklyn. Where should we look?

> How does the SHSAT actually work, and what does it take to get into Brooklyn Tech?

> Compare Jackson Heights and Sunnyside for a family with a toddler.

> Which Manhattan elementary schools have a dual-language program?

Release notes

Every school now carries a Motley rating on the grades it serves: elementary and middle schools on the state ELA and math tests, high schools on graduation and Regents results, so school lookups return each school's ratings and high schools rank by theirs. Neighborhood school scores count high schools too, and commute times read as a range from typical to high.
