Declared capabilities

  • Answers from your own mail and files
  • Private answers panel
  • Sources dashboard

Cost & access

Nothing is sold, bought or paid in ChatGPT. The optional anonymous questions use the user's own zkAPI account, set up outside ChatGPT in Olympus on their Mac; each question uses a little of that account's balance. The plugin never offers, links to or starts a purchase or payment.

Declared limitations

  • General knowledge; ChatGPT answers itself without calling Olympus, which is only for the user's own information.
  • A creative writing request with nothing to do with the user's own sources.
  • Current news, not the user's own information; ChatGPT uses its own search and does not call Olympus.

Onboarding example

Ask Olympus what I decided about the budget last month.

Description

From the marketplace listing

Olympus is a private knowledge engine that runs on your Mac. It indexes the sources you choose, such as your files in Dropbox and Google Drive and your Gmail, connected with accounts you already have, and sources such as the files on your Mac, Evernote, X bookmarks, Readwise, Telegram and WhatsApp, set up on your Mac. It answers your questions in ChatGPT with citations to your own items. Your index stays on your Mac. Olympus sorts every item, one by one, into Personal, Private or Secret, and you can tell it in your own words what is private for you. ChatGPT receives excerpts only from Personal items. Questions that match Private items are answered on your Mac and shown to you in a private Olympus panel; ChatGPT's model does not receive that answer. Olympus never sends what it recognizes as a Secret, such as a private key or a saved password, to ChatGPT, and never answers from it. Labels are automatic and can be wrong. ChatGPT reaches your Mac through one secure connection that you approve with a click on the Mac itself: no Olympus account, no password and no API keys. The Olympus dashboard in the ChatGPT sidebar shows what is connected, how far indexing has got and anything that needs you. Optionally, with your own zkAPI account set up in Olympus on your Mac, you can ask a frontier AI model a question anonymously. Type it in a private Olympus panel, encrypted between the panel and your Mac, and the answer appears there. Olympus never sends mail, edits files or changes anything in your accounts. Requires a Mac that is awake and online when you ask.

name: olympus-ask

# Ask Olympus

Olympus searches the sources the user connected on their Mac and returns
evidence with citations. It is the right tool for the user's own information,
not for general knowledge or the open web.

## When to use it

- Questions about the user's own mail, documents, notes, chats or bookmarks:
"what did Sam say about the lease", "when is the dentist", "what did we
  decide about the budget".
- Not for general facts, current events, or anything the user has not
connected. If unsure whether a source is connected, call
  `source_index_status` first.

## How to ask

1. Call `olympus_search` with the user's question in their own words,
keeping any names, dates and places they gave. Set `detail` to `"full"`
only when the user asks for all the details, the full results or every
   value; leave it out otherwise.
2. Answer only from the returned evidence, and cite each claim with its
evidence id in brackets, like [E2], linking the url when there is one. If
the evidence does not answer the question, say briefly what you could not
find. Search again with different words if the first results miss.
3. If you use `source_answer` instead (it is offered only when the user set
up an answer model on their Mac) and it returns `status: "working"` with a
`job_id`, call `source_answer_result` with that `job_id`, and again while
it says working. Do not ask the question again.
4. If a call fails, tell the user what the error says. If it says the Mac is
offline, ask them to wake the Mac or open Olympus.

## Private items

Olympus never gives you the contents of items the user keeps Private. When a
result's notes say some matching items are Private and Olympus is answering
privately in the panel:

- Keep your reply short: Olympus is preparing the answer privately on the
user's Mac, and it will appear in the panel, visible only to them.
- Do not guess at what those items say, do not report their file names as
findings, and do not ask the user to upload, attach or paste them: Olympus
  already has them.
- For a follow-up about them, search again with the follow-up as a complete
question (name the item, its date or subject); the panel answers it the
  same way.

## Anonymous questions

Only when the user asks for a private or anonymous question (for example
"use Olympus to ask a private question"):

- If they have not written the question yet, call `open_private_question`
at once and tell them to type it in the panel. Never ask them what the
question is: anything written in this conversation is no longer private.
- If they already wrote the question here and want it sent anonymously, call
`ask_anonymously` with it. If it returns `needs_choice`, ask once whether
they want Strict or Standard, then call again with their choice.
- If a result says anonymous questions are not set up or not available, tell
the user in those words; it is set up in Olympus on their Mac.

## Status and setup

- "Is my Dropbox connected?", "how far is indexing?" → `source_index_status`,
or `olympus_dashboard` for the full view.
- Mention coverage (unread or not-yet-sorted items) only if the user asks why
something is missing or the answer depends on it.
- If Olympus is not installed or not linked, follow the `olympus-setup` skill.

# Set up Olympus on a Mac

Olympus answers from the user's own sources with an engine that runs on their
Mac. ChatGPT reaches it through `https://mcp.olympusplugin.ai/openai/mcp`, and the
user approves ChatGPT on the Mac with one click.

## Where to install it

Olympus is installed from one page: https://olympusplugin.ai/install/. It
shows the single install step and what it does. You never run anything
yourself, and you do not repeat, write or suggest install commands: send the
user to that page. Do not suggest `npm`, `bun`, `brew`, `git clone`, `sudo`,
another site or editing files by hand.

## 1. Check what is already there

Call `olympus_dashboard`.

- `connection.state` `ready` or `installing`: Olympus is installed and
connected. Show the dashboard and stop.
- The call fails with "Your Mac is offline": Olympus is installed but the Mac
is asleep or Olympus is not running. Ask the user to wake the Mac, and point
them to https://olympusplugin.ai/help/mac-offline/. Then try again.
- The dashboard says Olympus isn't on the Mac, or a tool says Olympus is not
connected: ChatGPT is not connected to an Olympus engine yet. That is also
what it says when Olympus is installed but not yet connected, so continue
  with step 2.

## 2. Install, then connect

Ask whether Olympus is already installed on their Mac.

- **It isn't, or they are not sure:** check that they have a Mac with Apple
silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 13 Ventura or later. Intel Macs are not
supported: say so plainly and stop. Otherwise send them to
https://olympusplugin.ai/install/ and ask them to follow it on their Mac.
It needs no administrator password, installs for their macOS user only,
takes a minute or two and ends with "Olympus is installed and running". If
it stops with a message instead, ask them to read it to you, explain it
plainly, and point them to https://olympusplugin.ai/support/. When it has
  finished, continue below.
- **It is:** continue below.

To connect, ChatGPT asks the user to connect Olympus (sign in) the first time
a tool needs it. The page that opens must be in a browser on the Mac running
Olympus: it asks "Connect ChatGPT to Olympus?", and the user clicks
**Connect**. That click on their own Mac is the only proof of ownership: there is no code to
copy and no account to create.

## 3. Confirm

Call `olympus_dashboard` again. When it answers, tell the user Olympus is
connected and point them to the Olympus dashboard in the ChatGPT sidebar to
connect their first sources: Dropbox, Gmail or Google Drive, signing in with
accounts they already have. Other sources the dashboard lists (such as X
bookmarks, Readwise, Telegram or WhatsApp) are connected in Olympus on the
Mac. Indexing starts on its own. Olympus downloads its built-in models in the
background after install, so the first answers can take a while.

## Uninstall

If the user asks how to remove Olympus, point them to
https://olympusplugin.ai/install/#uninstall, which explains how to remove
Olympus and keep or delete their data.

## If something fails

Report what the dashboard, the installer or the error says, in plain
language, and stop. Do not suggest commands or workarounds.

Release notes

New icon and a clearer description. Olympus on your Mac can now read the files in your Desktop, Documents, Downloads and iCloud Drive folders, guides you step by step through connecting sources, and asks on first run how you want Private questions answered. Asking ChatGPT about your own mail, files, notes and messages, the private answer panel, the dashboard and anonymous questions work as before.
